China has moved ahead of the rest of the world by launching its next-generation Internet service two years ahead of schedule and is also the first country to have an Internet connection 10 times faster than today's popular networks.
The new Internet is 10 times faster than today's popular networks. |
Called the “Backbone network,” China’s next-generation Internet can transmit data at speeds of 1.2 terabits (1,200 gigabits) per second between Beijing in the north, Wuhan in central China, and Guangzhou in southern China.
The new Internet system, which includes more than 3,000 km of fiber optic cables, was activated in July 2023 and officially launched on November 13, 2023 after passing all operational tests.
Most of the world’s internet networks currently operate at speeds below 100 gigabits per second. Even the US has only just completed the transition to fifth-generation internet, which operates at speeds of just 400 gigabits per second.
The achievement, a collaboration between Tsinghua University, China Mobile, Huawei Technologies and Cernet Corporation, also refutes experts’ predictions that ultra-high-speed networks, with speeds exceeding 1 terabit per second, would not be available before 2025.
