Delegates attending the Forum included officials, experts and businessmen from China, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines as well as representatives of international organizations.
China, Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia are among the world leaders in seaweed farming, processing and consumption. Over the years, these countries have implemented cooperation in a number of areas in the seaweed industry, especially in technology and training.
Topics discussed at the forum included the current status of the seaweed industry, prospects for cultivation and market consumption, and progress in scientific and technological cooperation.
Delegates at the Forum said that promoting cooperation in the development of the seaweed industry in China and the ASEAN region brings many benefits to both sides. Besides providing healthy food and employment opportunities for local people, the industry also contributes to increasing income and promoting environmental protection.
Within the framework of the event, the launching ceremony of the Southeast Asia-China Seaweed Network and Cooperation Office took place.
In 2020, a report from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations described seaweed farming as “dominated by East and Southeast Asian countries.” It is a big business, generating $14.7 billion in 2019 from the value of seaweed alone.
