Dramatic video footage of the incident has been shared on television and social media. A gunman is seen reaching over the police officer’s shoulder to point his gun and shoot Atiq Ahmed in the head.

His brother, Ashraf Ahmed, was also shot shortly afterwards. In another video, a gunman is seen repeatedly firing at the bodies of the two brothers as they lie on the ground.
Two victims died within minutes, while police quickly arrested three suspects in the gruesome incident.
Media reports said the attackers posed as journalists. One surrendered shortly after the shooting, while police arrested the other two suspects later.
They were among a crowd that gathered as the Ahmed brothers, believed to be kingpins of a local crime syndicate, were taken out of a hospital in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, in handcuffs on Saturday evening.
A police officer was injured in the attack. Fearing the possibility of violent unrest following the incidents, the Uttar Pradesh government banned gatherings of more than four people across the state.
“The state government imposed the restrictions following the murder of Atiq Ahmed and Ashraf Ahmed, members of a major mafia gang involved in land grabbing and murder,” a senior police official said.
Before losing the 2014 election, Atiq Ahmed was an MP for the Samajwadi, and later the Apna Dal party, in the region. Last week, Indian police killed Atiq Ahmed's son in the city of Jhansi. He was wanted in connection with a murder case.
