Every year, farmers growing Malabar spinach in Dai Duc commune, Kim Thanh district, Hai Duong province earn a profit of 15 - 20 million VND/sao of Malabar spinach.

As someone with many years of experience growing this vegetable, Ms. Dao Thi Thuy, also from Long Khe village, said that each sao of Malabar spinach yields an average of about 1,000 bunches of vegetables per crop.

With the current price of 2,500 VND/bunch, farmers earn about 2 million VND/sao/batch. During the rainy season or hot weather, when vegetable sources are scarce, the price of Malabar spinach doubles, even triples compared to the present.

In addition, consumption is very convenient because traders come to the fields to buy. Malabar spinach planted once can be harvested for several years, each year harvesting from 12 to 15 times.

Malabar spinach - a safe vegetable

Dai Duc is a purely agricultural commune, so choosing the main crop for development is extremely important. Previously, Dai Duc was one of the chili growing areas of Hai Duong province.

After that, chili peppers gave unstable income, so people gradually switched to growing Malabar spinach. Up to now, the Malabar spinach growing area of ​​the commune has expanded to 10 hectares with about 70 households growing. This is the only concentrated Malabar spinach growing area in the province, accounting for nearly 80% of the commune's vegetable area.

Because it is suitable for the soil, Malabar spinach grows well and requires little investment. Farmers only need to focus on fertilizing the plants after each harvest. Malabar spinach has few pests and diseases, so the need for spraying pesticides is limited.

Previously, people often produced based on experience. After being educated and trained, knowing the harmful effects of inorganic fertilizers and pesticides, households only used pesticides for some serious pests and diseases, strictly following the quarantine period to ensure clean and safe products.

Being proactive in selecting seeds, caring for them, fertilizing them, and monitoring each stage of the spinach plant's growth are decisive factors in ensuring product quality.

Traders come to buy vegetables at the field and transport them to many provinces and cities for consumption. In early 2023, the spinach growing area of ​​Dai Duc commune was granted a growing area code by the Plant Protection Department.

Mr. Vu Van Hang, Director of Dai Duc Agricultural Service Cooperative (Kim Thanh District, Hai Duong Province) shared: “Compared to other crops, Malabar spinach brings relatively high economic efficiency, with stable prices and output. After deducting costs, each hectare of Malabar spinach brings an average income of over 200 million VND/year.
