Every year, in the 9th - 11th lunar months, after harvesting the last tea crops of the year, some households in the villages of Sung Phai commune (Lai Chau city) harvest old tea fruits to plant in order to expand the area and increase income.
This year, due to busy work and the need to exchange work with other households, Ms. Sung Thi Cua's family in Trung Chai village harvested tea fruits later than previous years.
Ms. Cua shared: For about 7 years now, every year my family has picked tea fruits to plant. The tea fruits are mainly obtained from old tea fields of the villagers. This area is far from the village, so I have to bring lunch and work through the afternoon to save time going home. In the crop with many workers picking, we get 5 bags of tea fruits. Each year, we plant a little more, and now my family has 2 tea fields planted from seeds, each crop also harvests 1.5 - 2 tons of tea. Thanks to that, the family income has increased significantly.
Ms. Phe Thi Xa's family in Hoi Lung village has also been growing tea seeds for many years. She does not know the exact area of tea in her family, but she only knows that her family currently has 3 tea fields that produce regular harvests. Realizing the potential of tea, last year she and her husband converted the ineffective land area to grow tea. Her family's tea area was expanded to 4 fields, of which 3 fields grow tea seeds. Ms. Xa confided: After picking tea fruits for about a week, I sow the seeds directly into the fields for production. If left for too long, they can easily spoil, so my family also quickly planted tea, and at the latest, the plan was completed by the beginning of the 12th lunar month.
People of Sung Phai commune pick tea fruits to plant.
The reason why some families maintain growing tea by seeds is because the tea seeds are taken from local shan tea plantations that are 40-50 years old, have strong vitality, require little care, do not need to invest in contour lines, and shan tea is adapted to the local climate. Moreover, the planting technique is easy to do, suitable for the traditional farming methods of the people, the survival rate is high, especially less affected by hot weather, people can ask for seeds to plant without spending money on buying seeds. In addition, they are proactive in planning production. To achieve a high germination rate of tea seeds, people often choose old tea fruits to plant, not young tea fruits, fallen fruits. Compared to growing tea by seeds, growing tea by seeds is later, after 3 years can harvest buds, however, the yield is equivalent but the ability to harvest is longer.
Mr. Tan A Pao - Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Sung Phai commune said: Currently, the commune has about 425.8 hectares of tea, most of which is tea grown from seeds, concentrated in the villages: Trung Chai, Ta Chai, Cu Nha La, Hoi Lung, Suoi Thau. Implementing the city's policy of developing commercial tea products, from 2015 to now, the commune has repeatedly provided Kim Tuyen tea seedlings. Last year, Shan tea seedlings were provided to the people in the commune, and households registered to plant according to the available land area. However, due to the demand of households wanting to plant local Shan tea, at the end of the tea season every year, people often pick the fruit to plant. From the actual production over the past many years, planting tea from seeds has proven to be effective. Therefore, along with propaganda and mobilizing people to plant tea trees, the commune encourages families to plant tea seeds to increase the economic value of the land area. Because if people plant tea by themselves, it will cost money to invest. Meanwhile, there are still many poor families with low income.
Currently, Sung Phai commune focuses on managing, protecting, and caring for the existing tea plantation area and effectively planting new ones. Strengthening the management of the use of fertilizers and pesticides towards safe production, ensuring consumer health, striving to achieve a fresh tea bud output of 3,585.4 tons, thereby improving the quality of life for the people.
