(Dan Tri) - At a rare age, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Son is still absorbed in his "billion dollar tree" serving the domestic and export markets.
In Da M'ri town, Da Huoai district, Lam Dong, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Son (75 years old) is known as a pioneer in agricultural economic development, especially organizing the production of high-quality durian.
Mr. Son was born and raised in Phu Tho province and served in the army for many years. At the end of 1994, after being discharged from the army, he and his wife and three children moved to Da M'ri to buy land for gardening and start a business.
According to Mr. Son's memory, at that time, the Da M'ri area had a lot of land, many gardens were not productive enough for people to grow, so weeds and bushes covered them.

"After buying the land, my wife and I started clearing grass, bushes, and improving the soil to plant trees. At that time, I also cut bamboo, reeds, and wood to build a hut right in the garden for the whole family to live in," Mr. Nguyen Thanh Son recalled.
In 1995, after renovating a 1-hectare garden, Mr. Son's family bought durian seeds to grow and plant. To have a source of income while waiting for the durian to bear fruit, Mr. Son dug a pond to raise fish, and raised chickens and other livestock.
After 5 years, the durian trees in the garden gave harvest and the life of Mr. Nguyen Thanh Son's family entered a new phase. In 2001, after harvesting durian and selling it to traders, the family had a large sum of money so they were able to build a spacious level 4 house.

In the following years, the economic model of durian combined with livestock farming helped Mr. Son's family increase their income and stabilize their lives.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Son said: "I use the money earned from the agricultural production model to reinvest and expand the garden. Up to now, my family has a total of 2.7 hectares of durian garden."
According to Mr. Son, in the 2024 crop season, his family's durian garden will yield nearly 40 tons of fruit and all agricultural products will be purchased by partners at a price of 70,000 VND/kg.
It is known that in 2017, in order to produce durian according to standards, effectively and have conditions to reach the market, Mr. Son established Da M'ri Agricultural Cooperative with 17 members and took on the position of director.
Up to now, Da M'ri Agricultural Cooperative has 70 official members, 55 associate members with a total durian production area of nearly 400 hectares.

In the 2024 crop, the quality of Da M'ri Agricultural Cooperative's durian is guaranteed, meeting the requirements of the growing area code, so it has achieved an export contract to China. According to Mr. Nguyen Thanh Son, in the last durian crop, the cooperative achieved an output of nearly 6,000 tons.
"Currently, cooperative members have an average income of 250-300 million VND/ha/year. Some households have a total income of billions of VND per year," Mr. Nguyen Thanh Son shared.
Mr. Nguyen Cong Ha, Head of the Economic Infrastructure Department of Da Huoai District, Lam Dong commented: "Mr. Nguyen Thanh Son is an enthusiastic person, always encouraging people to do business and Da M'ri Agricultural Cooperative is a good business unit of the locality.
Da Huoai district is building the "Da Huoai durian" brand and Mr. Son is enthusiastically cooperating with the authorities in this work.
