On October 1, the National Innovation Center (NIC) celebrated its 5th anniversary along with the Vietnam Innovation Day 2024 (Innovate Viet Nam 2024). Right before the event, on September 30, Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Chi Dung had an interview with the press about the idea of establishing NIC as well as the implementation process and orientation of NIC's activities in the next stage.
According to the head of the Ministry of Planning and Investment, after 5 years of establishment, NIC is now the core of the ecosystem, a bridge between the State, enterprises, institutes - schools to research centers, financial institutions, incubation support units... to lead, build and develop Vietnam's innovation ecosystem...
“It can be said that hundreds of large and small enterprises have benefited from NIC, especially in supporting digital transformation. NIC has done a lot of good things in a short time, and this is just the beginning. How to turn NIC into a regional leader, Vietnam into a destination for regional and world innovation, first of all, forming 9 technology industries that have been identified as priority choices, helping Vietnam make the best use of every smallest opportunity from the 4.0 industrial revolution.
In the coming time, NIC will also be assigned an important task of managing the training program to develop human resources for the semiconductor industry. This is a very ambitious and strategic goal, which is to train at least 50,000 semiconductor engineers from now until 2050, supplying the Vietnamese market and possibly abroad, taking advantage of the opportunity immediately.
“We have a very strong human resource, but we must exploit it thoroughly and not train people without skills to meet the demand. The demand is very large, people are very available, we will train them, we believe we will quickly rise up and dominate the global value chain in the semiconductor industry. This is one of the tasks that NIC is strongly aiming for,” Minister Nguyen Chi Dung shared.
To promote the development of innovation activities in general and of NIC in particular, according to the Minister, it is necessary to first form a complete, synchronous, and unified mechanism and policy so that NIC can operate best according to international standards.
Along with that, in terms of facilities, research centers, labs, and housing for experts must be completed. These are the factors that NIC Hoa Lac still lacks. Without ensuring adequate infrastructure, it is impossible to retain experts, both domestic and foreign.
The next equally important task is to quickly form 9 technology industries at NIC, creating a sustainable ecosystem, including smart manufacturing, smart cities, digital communications, cyber security, environment, healthcare, semiconductors, hydrogen, etc.
