Exercising in hot weather can easily lead to heat cramps.

Heat cramps can be an early symptom of heatstroke. Not only athletes, but also the elderly, children and infants are at higher risk of heat cramps.

Dehydration is one of the main causes of heat cramps. Factors that make the body susceptible to dehydration include not drinking enough water, sweating a lot, intense physical activity in hot weather, high fever, diarrhea, and vomiting.

Heat cramps can be silent until symptoms begin to become severe, causing muscle spasms, weakness, severe muscle pain, flushed skin, and high fever.

To reduce the risk of heat cramps, it is best to avoid physical activity when it is hot and to seek a cool, well-ventilated area to avoid the heat. If you feel too hot, apply a cool compress or towel to your face, neck or chest.

One thing that is indispensable is to drink enough water. It can be water, fruit juice or electrolyte drinks containing sodium and potassium. If you have cramps, massage and stretch the muscles slowly and gently, according to Healthline .
