(Dan Tri) - Responding to Dan Tri, former assistant coach Park Hang Seo, expert Bae Ji Won said that it was not a coincidence that the Vietnamese team had just lost to Russia and Thailand, and that one defeat even led to another.
How do you evaluate the performance of the Vietnamese team in the two friendly matches with Russia and Thailand?
- Everyone knows that Russia is the stronger team. It is normal for the Vietnamese team to lose to such an opponent. However, we need to look at the performance of the Vietnamese team in more detail.
In football, no defeat is "natural", meaning no team takes the field with the mindset of losing. Although Russia is superior in class, it is necessary to analyze the defeat correctly, because the shortcomings and lessons learned will help the Vietnamese team improve.
It should be emphasized that the outstanding problems in the defeat against Russia partly led to the subsequent defeat against Thailand.
Learning from such tough matches is not only a lesson in sports but also a lesson in the spirit of overcoming challenges. This is not unlike the lessons of resilience and the constant drive to improve that can be seen in all aspects of life, even when faced with challenging situations.
Overall, the performance, physical foundation and tactics of the Vietnamese team have not changed much compared to the time of Coach Troussier. Very serious problems have been revealed in the defense.
In situations where the opponent counterattacks quickly, Vietnam's defense lacks tightness and closeness in marking, organized cover and smooth coordination between midfielders. This is an issue that needs to be resolved to prepare for the upcoming AFF Cup.
There is no need to worry too much about the result of the Vietnamese team losing to Thailand. However, the possibility of winning the Southeast Asian championship will only increase if these problems are identified, solutions are found and improved through the match against Thailand.
Has coach Kim Sang Sik shown his role in leading the Vietnamese team?
- I cannot comment much on Mr. Kim's coaching style, from selecting players to applying tactics, because I think he has not had enough time to watch the matches and select players after being appointed.
I also think he hasn't had enough time to train the players according to his playing style and tactical philosophy. However, in some situations of the match, I can give advice and evaluate Coach Kim Sang Sik's tactics and fitness.
First, in the match against Russia, he used many players who had played under coach Park Hang Seo. This was a different player choice compared to his predecessor Troussier. Russia is a team with considerable physical strength and power, they played quite tough and annoying. Russia took full advantage of their physical strength in the match.
Most European teams are as physically strong as the Russian team. In terms of playing style, the Russian team penetrates the opponent's penalty area with fast, high-speed movements, combined with good individual techniques, making them extremely dangerous.
When facing opponents with superior physical strength and skill, it is important that the Vietnamese team knows how to build tactics and distribute physical strength during the match.
The way Vietnam's team applies tactics after Park Hang Seo's time is problematic, whether it's coach Philippe Troussier or coach Kim Sang Sik. The evidence is that the Vietnam team easily lets the opponent score and fails to take advantage of scoring opportunities.
In other words, the Vietnamese team's defensive organization and the midfield's role in controlling the tempo were not effective enough. As a result, the strikers could not score. In short, the understanding and movement in the overall tactics were not good, and the balance between attack and defense was not high.
If the opponent has a strong attack, we need to move more actively to prevent the opponent from being fierce, but the current Vietnamese team has not met that requirement. Mr. Kim Sang Sik's team needs to prepare and strengthen their physical strength and tactical plans more, while improving the connection between the lines.
After the generation that won the silver medal at the U23 Asia, the Vietnamese team currently does not have a successor. The stars are increasingly losing their form, and young players are not capable enough to replace them. Is Vietnamese football lacking football talent or is the youth player training system not able to ensure the quality to produce good players like before, sir?
- We need to recall the U23 Vietnam team at the 2018 U23 Asian Cup. At that time, coach Park Hang Seo had just been appointed, and U23 Vietnam was not highly rated at the tournament. On the contrary, there was some concern about the players' performance and not many people expected a good result.
In the friendly matches before the tournament, the coaching staff assessed that it would be very difficult for U23 Vietnam to reach the quarter-finals. This means that the U23 generation at that time was not necessarily superior to the later generations of players, including the present.
However, at that time we found feasible and reliable factors. The training process before the tournament was carefully prepared, systematic and highly effective. As a result, the U23 Vietnam team had good coordination and the team spirit was also high.
Each player has a strong determination to defeat the opponent and enough courage to overcome the harsh training process in the positive atmosphere of the whole team. The training and physical training process is highly effective partly due to the good atmosphere and spirit of the whole team.
Therefore, it is very important that the head coach knows how to lead the team, how to manage the players and the team according to the philosophy, and how to raise morale. That is the role and responsibility of the head coach. The support and cooperation of the assistant coaches is also extremely necessary. Therefore, the ability and experience of the assistant coaches need to be highly valued.
Since 2018, U23 Vietnam has not achieved any positive results. The continuous failures also prove that the current level of football has not improved much. It is necessary to realize that there is not much difference between 2018 and now, so we must focus on improving the overall performance of the team instead of focusing on a few individuals.
Can naturalizing Vietnamese players improve the performance of the Vietnamese national team and create new momentum for football development, like what Indonesia is reaping?
In my personal opinion, I think the impact of overseas Vietnamese players on Vietnamese football is quite positive. Currently, Indonesia is the national team that exploits the use of naturalized players very well.
It is not easy to make an assessment because it is unclear how many Vietnamese players are playing abroad and what their level is. However, for Vietnamese football to benefit from overseas Vietnamese players, it requires active cooperation and support from the Vietnam Football Federation.
V-League has officially started. Last season's tournament regulations included a clause that each club must register 6 players aged 16-22, but this season that clause has been removed. In the context of Vietnamese football lacking quality young players, is this decision really reasonable?
- I have worked in Vietnam at both the national team and the club. In the past, I have pointed out the structural problems of Vietnamese football. What I mainly mentioned was the implementation plan for the future, including youth tournaments and the national championship system, which is often disrupted.
In addition, there is also the problem of players' performance declining due to the sometimes too tight and dense match schedule. It is regrettable that changes in the regulations of professional tournaments have led to young talents losing the opportunity to strive.
In particular, U22 players often develop into mainstays in clubs and national teams in just two or three years, the short-term potential of football is in their hands. In my experience, the number of youth teams in Thailand is much larger and Vietnam cannot compare.
In addition, many teams at different levels, from amateur, semi-professional to professional, compete weekly in tournaments.
From the perspective of Vietnamese football, it is necessary to compare the system with Thai football in a comprehensive and in-depth way, because the infrastructure and human resources have helped raise the level of Thai football. To ensure human resources, the first thing to do is to increase the number of football teams.
How does Korean football motivate the development of youth football in general and give young players the opportunity to develop in particular, sir?
- Korean football today has a tight football system and organizational structure. Many youth teams of different ages participate in many tournaments throughout the year, including the inter-regional tournament which is the fifth division in the football competition system. Each professional club also has its own youth team and is given many conditions to support its development.
In particular, excellent young players are specially managed by professional clubs after the age of 18. In Korea, youth and regional tournaments are held annually in many regions. There are tournaments that only youth teams of professional clubs participate in.
Young players compete for titles on a yearly basis. The best players will have the opportunity to join professional clubs. They will then have the opportunity to develop their careers as professional players.
The large number of talented young players discovered each year is the result of well-organized training systems and personnel infrastructure.
Perhaps we still have to talk about the issue of facilities, even though we have talked about it many times. From the quality of the playing field to the training equipment of the clubs participating in the V-League, everything is not guaranteed and it seems that few people are aware of the serious impact of this lack. What is your opinion on this issue?
- To implement a technical style of play, the best training conditions, stadium infrastructure and quality of the pitch must meet standards. Up to now, even the V-League has to be organized on substandard pitches, and players have to practice on substandard pitches.
The quality of both the training ground and the playing field needs to be improved to ensure diversity in training, skill development and tactical implementation. In addition, the living conditions of the players at the club also need to be further upgraded.
A variety of tactical and physical exercises are necessary, but it is important to have adequate equipment first. In addition, the coach needs to systematize the training program based on the use of equipment.
Thank you for the conversation!
