The highly effective earthworm farming model of Mr. Thai Quang Nhat contributes to opening up a direction for economic development that ensures the environment in building new rural areas and civilized urban areas in Vu Quang (Ha Tinh).

Not only is he a teacher with solid expertise and dedication to his work, Mr. Thai Quang Nhat (born in 1978, working at Vu Quang Town Primary School) is also actively developing the economy by building a model of raising earthworms. Having a passion for agricultural production, in addition to class time, Mr. Nhat "rolls up his sleeves" to take care of the earthworm raising model combined with the production of organic microbial fertilizers.
Sharing the opportunity to raise earthworms, Mr. Nhat recalled: "In 2021, during a trip to visit relatives in Thuong Tin district (Hanoi), I noticed that many households here raised earthworms combined with livestock and farming, bringing in high income, without requiring much capital and effort, so I started to learn and fell in love with this model."
When returning to his hometown, Mr. Nhat realized that there were many large-scale pig farms in the area, with a lot of waste that had not been utilized. In addition, in neighboring localities, there were also many farms raising cows, chickens, etc. From there, he was determined to implement the idea of raising earthworms and creating a source of clean organic fertilizer for crops.
After 2 years, Mr. Nhat's earthworm farming model has expanded to an area of more than 600 m2 .
To turn the idea into reality, Mr. Nhat has worked hard to research books, newspapers, and documents, and continued to visit models in Thanh Chuong district (Nghe An) about the process of producing organic fertilizer from raising earthworms. After accumulating knowledge and experience, he discussed with his family to rent more than 3 hectares of land for growing acacia in residential group 2, Vu Quang town to implement the model.
He invested more than 120 million VND to build a settling tank and a fairly simple cage with an area of just over 200 m2 and bought 4.2 tons of seeds from a vermicompost farm in Thanh Chuong to raise. After that, he collected waste from local pig farms, brought it back to compost with biological products and used it as daily food for the worms.
Thanks to proper care, earthworms thrive. Up to now, Mr. Nhat has expanded the breeding area to more than 600 m2 ; at the same time, he installed a sprinkler irrigation system to ensure that the worms grow and develop well.
Mr. Nhat's earthworm products are increasingly purchased by farms in Vu Quang and neighboring districts.
Happily sharing his achievements, Mr. Nhat said: “Over the time of establishment, the results have exceeded the expectations of me and my family. Products from earthworms are increasingly purchased by facilities and farms in Vu Quang and neighboring districts, used as feed for poultry and aquatic products. Microbiological organic fertilizers are sold to vegetable and fruit growing models following VietGAP and organic standards. In addition, I also sell breeding animals to people in need.”
It is known that for nearly 2 years, Mr. Nhat's farm has sold 30 tons of biofertilizer, nearly 2 tons of seeds, 1 ton of earthworms, bringing in hundreds of millions of dong in income.
In particular, the model has contributed to solving the problem of environmental pollution in the area of new rural construction and civilized urban areas in Vu Quang. With the characteristic of preferring animal manure as food, earthworms quickly "process" food when soaked and composted with microorganisms to help eliminate odors, minimizing the impact on the environment.
Mr. Nhat informed: "In winter, worms grow and develop more strongly, so each month we can earn from 17 to 20 million VND; in summer, due to hot weather, worms grow less but still generate income from 8 to 10 million VND."
Raising earthworms not only helps Mr. Nhat's family have a stable income but also contributes to protecting the environment.
"Raising earthworms not only brings high economic efficiency but also contributes to reducing environmental pollution in rural areas. The effectiveness of the earthworm raising model combined with the production of organic microbial fertilizers built by Mr. Thai Quang Nhat has opened up a new direction in local economic development in the direction of environmental protection. This is also an issue that the locality is very concerned about in the process of implementing civilized urban criteria" - Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Vu Quang town Le Ngoc Trung assessed Mr. Nhat's model.
