Ha Tinh City Center for Science and Technology Application and Plant and Livestock Protection deploys a demonstration model of intercropping black tiger shrimp and monosex tilapia in tarpaulin-lined ponds.

In Ha Tinh city, people in farming areas in Thach Hung, Thach Ha, Dong Mon wards have experience in intercropping some shrimp, crab, yellowfin pomfret, sea bass... but with low investment and lack of techniques, diseases often occur and economic efficiency is not high.

Faced with this situation, applying new farming methods such as intercropping in lined ponds, applying organic technology; diversifying farming objects; increasing the dissemination of techniques... are necessary solutions to stabilize farming activities as well as reduce environmental pollution.

On that basis, the Center for Application of Science and Technology and Protection of Plants and Livestock of Ha Tinh City has built a demonstration model of intercropping with monosex tilapia and black tiger shrimp in a tarpaulin-lined pond at Mr. Nguyen Van Huong's household (Quyet Tien Residential Area, Dong Mon Ward) on an area of 8,000m2 .

Tiger shrimp are stocked at a density of 15 shrimp/ m2 , size 2.5 cm/shrimp, raised separately before being stocked in mixed ponds to ensure survival rate; monosex tilapia: 0.8 shrimp/ m2 , size 4-5 cm/shrimp.

Intercropping monosex black tiger shrimp and tilapia in tarpaulin-lined ponds is a form of intercropping that combines farming objects with mutually supportive characteristics, making full use of food from the surface, middle and bottom layers, limiting the use of drugs and chemicals to treat the environment. Thereby, improving the environment of ponds where diseases often occur; increasing economic efficiency towards sustainable production.

Accordingly , in the model, black tiger shrimp are stocked at a density of 15 shrimp/ m2 , size 2.5 cm/shrimp, raised separately before being stocked in mixed ponds to ensure survival rate; monosex tilapia are stocked at a density of 0.8 shrimp/ m2 , size 4-5 cm/shrimp.

The model will contribute to transferring the technique of intercropping black tiger shrimp and monosex tilapia in tarpaulin-lined ponds to people; diversifying farming objects with high economic efficiency, forming intercropping areas in the direction of applying advanced science and technology in production.
