Echoes from the vast forest
From Dong Xoai City, we traveled about 40km by motorbike along National Highway 14 to Minh Hung intersection, Minh Hung commune, Bu Dang district. Then we continued on a smooth, paved road winding through lush green hills covered with coffee and cashew trees. On both sides of the road were newly built multi-story houses, gradually replacing the simple longhouses of the Xtieng people of the past. It took us nearly an hour by motorbike to find the house of Mr. Dieu M'Rieng, born in 1953, a member of the Xtieng ethnic group, residing in Duong 10 commune, Bu Dang district.
Mr. Dieu M'Rieng recalled his memories: “During the war, the Xtieng people cultivated rice on their hillside fields and pounded it with pestles, ready to leave their homes behind to follow the revolution. They planted wheat during the day and stayed up all night pounding rice to feed the troops, 'as much rice as there is love,' immeasurable. Soc Bom Bo has become a legend and is immortalized by time, as the names of the land, the people, every river, and every mountain are deeply imprinted with the heroic memories of a time of war filled with bombs and bullets.”
Returning to Bom Bo village (now part of Binh Minh commune, Bu Dang district), we met the village elder Dieu Len, born in 1945, of the Xtieng ethnic group. Elder Dieu Len preserves the memories of a heroic era of the village and is also an outstanding representative of the Xtieng people during the brutal years of war.
Born into a family with a rich revolutionary tradition, and raised in Bom Bo, during the resistance war against the American imperialists, Mr. Dieu Len participated in more than 40 battles, distinguished himself many times, and was awarded many prestigious titles by the State.
With peace restored and life returning to normal, old man Dieu Len collected artifacts associated with Bom Bo, and stories about the courageous people of Bom Bo village in the past, to educate the younger generation about revolutionary traditions…
Changes in the Heroic Homeland
After 50 years of liberation and 36 years of re-establishment, Bu Dang, once a mountainous district with vast land, sparse population, a high percentage of poor households, and limited socio-economic infrastructure, has undergone remarkable development. Today, the district comprises 16 communes and towns with approximately 150,000 inhabitants, and its economic structure has shifted in the right direction. Agriculture, which accounted for 90% at the time of re-establishment, has now decreased to nearly 40%; while industry has increased to 26% and trade and services to 34%. The economy has grown significantly, people's lives have improved noticeably, with average per capita income reaching 77 million VND/person/year; and the poverty rate has decreased to 0.35%.
The people of Bom Bo today still preserve their traditional cultural identity with folk songs, traditional dances, and gong and drum performances during festivals. Restoring and developing Bom Bo village into a historical and cultural site is significant not only for the Xtieng ethnic people but also a source of pride for the Bu Dang region, contributing to the preservation of revolutionary traditions and serving the goals of local economic and tourism development.”
Mr. Điểu Cóc, a member of the Xtiêng ethnic group in Bom Bo hamlet, Bình Minh commune, Bù Đăng district.
Socio-economic infrastructure has been invested in and built, inter-commune roads have been asphalted, 100% of inter-village roads have been hardened, 99% of households have access to the national power grid, cultural institutions from the district to the grassroots level continue to be improved, 99.85% of households have access to clean water, all communes and towns in the district have eradicated illiteracy and maintained the results of universal secondary education, with 34 out of 54 schools meeting national standards. The appearance of rural areas has changed significantly, with 13 out of 15 communes achieving new rural area standards, including 3 communes achieving advanced new rural area standards. Duc Phong town is increasingly green, clean, and beautiful, meeting the standards of a type V urban area.
With economic development, local authorities are paying more attention to preserving cultural identity. Across the road from the elderly Dieu Len's house is the Xtieng ethnic cultural conservation area in Bom Bo village, covering over 113 hectares and managed by the People's Committee of Bu Dang district.
According to the leaders of the Xtieng Bom Bo Cultural Preservation Area, the locality has 13 gong ensembles with about 70 artisans skilled in performing gong music, which carries ritual and spiritual significance. The district also focuses on developing gong performance art into a distinctive tourism product to be showcased at the Xtieng Bom Bo Ethnic Cultural Preservation Area, serving both locals and tourists. This will effectively promote traditional cultural values and improve the lives of the local people.
