Ask:
My daughter got measles from her schoolmate and is currently being cared for at home. I would like to ask if children with measles need to absolutely avoid wind and water?

Dr. Nguyen Thu Thao, Pediatrics, Tam Anh General Hospital answered:
"Children with measles should avoid wind and water" is a concept that parents whisper to each other when taking care of children with this disease. However, parents should note that children with measles can still bathe normally.
Bathing and maintaining good personal hygiene every day helps alleviate symptoms and prevent complications of bacterial infection. Not only that, bathing properly also helps children with measles feel more comfortable and at ease.
When bathing a child with measles, parents should note not to bathe the child too late at night; bathe in a draft-free room with warm water; bathe quickly for 5-10 minutes. After bathing, the child needs to be dried and kept warm.
Similar to the concept of "avoiding the wind". If the weather is hot, uncomfortable or feverish, it will cause children to sweat more, creating conditions for bacteria to grow and cause illness. Parents should let their children stay in well-ventilated places with suitable temperatures. Parents can turn on the fan in the child's bedroom to circulate the air, helping the child feel comfortable; however, do not point the fan directly at the child because this can cause the child to catch a cold and become more sick.
Measles is an acute respiratory infectious disease with a high risk of outbreak. Healthy people can become infected by inhaling measles virus in the air, being near a sick person or coming into contact with a surface containing the virus.
Therefore, when caring for children with measles, parents need to pay special attention to preventing the spread of the measles agent. Children with measles should be isolated from healthy children and avoid going to crowded areas (schools, kindergartens, parks, etc.).
In necessary cases, children must wear medical masks when going out. Similarly, parents need to wear antibacterial masks when caring for children with measles, and wash their hands with soap after contact with children.
Children with measles should rest more in a well-ventilated space that is regularly cleaned, disinfected and has suitable lighting. Avoid strenuous exercise.
