“Be proud of tradition, continue the feats, worthy of the name of Uncle Ho's soldiers” is not simply a tradition education activity, but also an affirmation that there has never been a separation or discontinuity between the heroic past and the glorious present, between the previous generation and the next generation... to convey faith, spread will, unite strength, and continue the glorious tradition of the Vietnam People's Army.

Instilling faith, forging strength, continuing glorious traditions

A special performance at the program.

As part of a series of activities to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Vietnam People's Army (December 22, 1944 - December 22, 2024), the 35th anniversary of the National Defense Day (December 22, 1989 - December 22, 2024), on the evening of December 19, the Thanh Hoa Provincial Military Command organized an exchange and discussion with the theme "Proud of tradition, continuing the feats, worthy of Uncle Ho's soldiers" and awarded prizes for competitions, with the participation of a large number of officers and soldiers of military units in the province. Revolving around the sharing of guest delegates representing generations, interspersed with outstanding performances, the discussion became a highlight, strongly spreading inspirational stories.

That is the story of veteran, Colonel Nguyen Tien Quynh, former Deputy Political Commissar of the Provincial Military Command, former Vice President of the Provincial Veterans Association - who participated in many fierce battles in the wars to defend the Fatherland. It is the profound but very close feeling of Lieutenant Colonel Le Van Khanh, Political Commissar of the Hoang Hoa District Military Command about the continuous growth of the Vietnam People's Army associated with his own work and growth. It is the determination of the young generation of the army who are striving day and night to train, to promote the qualities of Uncle Ho's soldiers of Senior Lieutenant Nguyen Thai Lam, Political Commissar of Company 3, Battalion 40, Provincial Military Command.

Veteran Nguyen Tien Quynh shares memories of past battles.

During the discussion, Colonel Nguyen Tien Quynh's sharing of the most memorable memories of the fierce days of war in the past attracted the attention of the delegates right from the beginning of the program. Those were the long days on the Vi Xuyen front (Ha Giang) from 1987-1993. At that time, as Deputy Political Commissar of Regiment 818, Division 314, he often went to inspect the front, visit and encourage officers and soldiers in the battalions directly involved in the fight. The battlefield was fierce, every time he left the base, the enemy's artillery fired continuously. Once, he was thrown onto the hillside by the pressure of the bullets, but he never left his officers and soldiers. When he woke up, he continued walking, going to each battalion to check the situation, encouraging the soldiers to fight with determination.

“I was shot by enemy artillery many times, so my brothers called me the artillery commander. When peace was restored, I met many comrades on the Vi Xuyen front that year, many brothers still called me that,” Colonel Nguyen Tien Quynh humorously said.

That story is part of the glorious tradition of the heroic Vietnam People's Army. In it, there are sacrifices and losses that cannot be measured in words by the predecessors. Those who "fell down to become the land of the Fatherland, their souls flew up to become the spirit of the nation"...

Born in 1956 in Lien Loc commune (Hau Loc), Mr. Quynh joined the army at the age of 18, directly participating in the battles to liberate Binh Dinh province, then smashing the Phan Rang defense line, opening the way for our army to enter and liberate Saigon. When the country was unified, his unit still had to stay to stabilize the situation in the South and was sent by the unit to study to improve their qualifications. It was not until 1976 that he was able to return to the North to work as a training commander. After that, he set off again, directly participating in the northern border war from the early days on the Lang Son front (February 1979). When this front temporarily calmed down, his unit continued to be ordered to march and fight on the fierce Vi Xuyen front until the end of the war.

Having gone through those battles, what Mr. Quynh feels is most meaningful is the day he held a gun, with his comrades "living on rocks to fight the enemy; dying and turning into immortal stone". To him, those were the difficult but glorious and beautiful days of his life.

Many times I was hit by enemy artillery, so my brothers called me the artillery commander. When peace was restored, I met many comrades on the Vi Xuyen front that year, many brothers still called me that.

Colonel Nguyen Tien Quynh

That story is part of the glorious tradition of the heroic Vietnam People's Army. In it, there are sacrifices and losses that cannot be measured in words by the predecessors. Those who "fell to become the land of the Fatherland, their souls flew up to become the spirit of the nation"... And that glorious tradition is being followed by generations who day and night contribute their strength and intelligence to build a revolutionary, disciplined, elite, and gradually modern Vietnam People's Army. In his sharing, Lieutenant Colonel Le Van Khanh, Political Commissar, Hoang Hoa District Military Command, partly expressed that strength. That is the regularity in both military style and the implementation of order and discipline; the development and streamlining of the organizational structure of military agencies and units; the spirit of always being ready to receive and excellently complete all tasks, like the spirit of General Phan Van Giang, Minister of National Defense: "Where there are difficulties and dangers, there are soldiers".

That strength and maturity also lies in the remarkable development in the level of the army and the types of modern weapons, equipment and technical means. Among them, there are many types of weapons and means of the world's most advanced such as Su30-MK2 aircraft, S-300 and S-57 air defense missiles, the development of the 198th Submarine Brigade and the squadrons of escort ships, missile boats, torpedo boats...

The sharing of Senior Lieutenant Nguyen Thai Lam, Political Commissar of Company 3, Battalion 40, Provincial Military Command in the discussion is the determination to act of the young generation in the army. The young generation of military units stationed in the province are striving to study and practice both moral qualities and military discipline, political mettle and a spirit of steadfastness with the Party's goals and ideals to strive in training, access science and technology, master modern weapons and technical means, and be ready to complete all tasks. That is the way to be more worthy of President Ho Chi Minh's teachings: "Our army is loyal to the Party, filial to the people, ready to fight and sacrifice for the independence and freedom of the Fatherland, for socialism. Every task is completed, every difficulty is overcome, every enemy is defeated".

With many real, emotional stories, the talk show with the theme: "Proud of tradition, continuing the feats, worthy of the name of Uncle Ho's soldiers" has become a practical, creative traditional education activity, conveying inspiration, belief, determination to build military units in the province in the direction of revolution, discipline, elite, step by step modernity, contributing to building and protecting the Fatherland. It is also an affirmation that there has never been a separation, a discontinuity between the heroic past and the glorious present, between the previous generation of fathers and the next generation of children... continuing the glorious tradition of the Vietnam People's Army.
