The force is still thin.
In the context of the country's literature entering a new stage of development with many bright spots in writing, young writers of the 8X and 9X generations have gradually affirmed their mark in the field of literature about soldiers and revolutionary war.
Without the strength of experience, the works of young writers mainly focus on post-war topics, today's soldiers or re-enact the war of the fathers' generation... to honor the profound spiritual values of the nation through the eyes of the contemporary generation.
One of the signs of the succession of large-scale topics is the names: Nguyen Quang Hung, Doan Van Mat, Nguyen Minh Cuong, Nguyen Phu, Le Vu Truong Giang, Ly Huu Luong, Dinh Phuong, Nguyen Thi Kim Hoa, Nguyen Thi Kim Nhung, Phan Duc Loc, Tran Viet Hoang... are all making an impression in their works on the above topics.
The epic poem “Red Plains” by Ly Huu Luong (born in 1988), a Dao ethnic soldier who is currently an editor of the Army Literature Magazine, recreated the heroic battles with vivid, poetic images, depicting the brave fighting spirit and great sacrifices of volunteer soldiers.
Also in the team of writers wearing military uniforms, poet Nguyen Thi Kim Nhung with the long poem "From the mist falling" delicately portrayed stories about soldiers full of enthusiasm to dedicate and sacrifice for the Fatherland.
Some writers of the 8X generation have won Literature, Art and Journalism Awards on the topics of armed forces and revolutionary war, marking their journey to conquer large and challenging topics.
Among them, poet Doan Van Mat was inspired by the Hoang Sa archipelago of the Fatherland to write the epic poem “Song tram bien truc”; poet Nguyen Quang Hung, in his emotion and pride for the sea and islands, published the work “Milestone in the person”…
In particular, there are units such as the Political Officer School (under the Ministry of National Defense) where both teachers and students enthusiastically participated. Lieutenant Colonel - Doctor Nguyen Minh Cuong left his mark with the long poem "My Heart is the Border" about the battle to protect the northern border in 1979.
His students Tran Viet Hoang and Lam Minh Thuong (both born in 2002) are friends in Squad 16, class CT26D, and are young aspiring poets who are making an impression on the literary world.
Tran Viet Hoang has published works on the topic of soldiers and revolutionary war, including: "Ngay chua suong nao" (poetry collection, Writers Association Publishing House, 2024), "Bay ve mua" (epic poem, Literature Publishing House, 2025); was awarded the Award for studying and following Ho Chi Minh's ideology, morality and style in 2023. Lam Minh Thuong, a Khmer ethnic, has written many works on the topic published in the Literature and Arts Newspaper, the Army Literature and Arts Magazine, and the Huong River Magazine...
Need determination and great desire
Lieutenant Colonel, writer Nguyen Phu, lecturer at the Border Guard Academy, commented: It is easy to see that in the past few decades, we have really lacked works about soldiers and revolutionary wars that have made a big impact. One of the many reasons is that the team of writers in military uniforms is gradually disappearing. There are writers in the military who have not paid attention to the topic or have not really stood out.
Dr. Le Vu Truong Giang, a lecturer at the University of Science - Hue University, believes that with a big topic, the writer needs to be determined and have great aspirations to be deeply aware of his or her responsibility. According to him, the previous generation with big names such as Nguyen Thi, Nguyen Minh Chau, Bao Ninh, Chu Lai, Le Luu, Khuat Quang Thuy... have contributed exemplary works on the topic of revolutionary war. That gives young authors many sources of creative inspiration.
Poet Tran Viet Hoang shared that the young generation of artists who did not directly experience the war is a major obstacle in the creative process. However, if they practice and hone their creative skills, immerse themselves in reality, and do not retrace old paths, the young artists can absolutely write valuable works, bringing the public new, more unique, and more vivid perspectives.
To be motivated with the topic of soldiers and revolutionary war, writers need to enhance their knowledge and emotions with national history to understand better and have a comprehensive view. Besides familiar genres such as epic poems, memoirs, short stories, novels, etc., young authors can experiment with other genres such as comics, film scripts, digital art forms (digital art, video art), etc. to help bring the topic of soldiers and revolutionary war closer to readers in the digital age.
Literary agencies and organizations need to develop more diverse creative support programs specifically for young authors with major themes including scholarship support, practical research, and specialized skills courses.
Chairman of the Vietnam Writers Association Nguyen Quang Thieu emphasized: A good work must have a great sense of mission, open up and call for altruism, sharing and dedication. By promoting creativity, taking advantage of opportunities to learn, connect and support, young authors are having many opportunities to create valuable works, contributing to reviving the heroic memories of soldiers and revolutionary wars, creating a great mark in literature.
