To exploit the strengths of coconut trees, since 2021, Tra Vinh province has encouraged farmers to apply advanced farming methods that meet organic standards; meeting European - UE, US - USDA, Japan - JAS, Australia - ACO, GlobalGAP standards... Up to now, the province has developed nearly 27,400 hectares of coconut growing area, with more than 20,000 hectares bearing fruit, with an output of 3.9 million tons/year, of which about 5,100 hectares are organic coconut. The organic coconut area is being planted by businesses and cooperatives in association and consuming products at prices 10-15% higher than market prices. Currently, there are over 1,240 hectares of coconut that meet the requirements for plant quarantine for fresh coconuts exported to the Chinese market.
“Determining coconut as the main crop of the commune, the Commune People's Committee proactively coordinates with enterprises to identify organic coconut material areas; coordinates with specialized sectors such as the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection to regularly organize training on organic prevention and control to ensure that coconut products produced are clean, meeting the needs of the domestic market as well as export” - Mr. Nguyen Van Nguyen, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Huyen Hoi Commune, Cang Long District, a locality with more than 300 hectares of organic coconuts, shared.
Tra Vinh province aims to expand the coconut area by 2025, apply science and technology to increase coconut productivity to about 16 tons/ha/year and have at least 8,000 hectares of coconut grown in an organic direction; of which, 6,000 hectares have achieved international organic certification. Accordingly, the Provincial People's Committee has directed functional agencies to guide and facilitate organizations and individuals to access the policies of the Central and the province in production and business; promote trade promotion activities, develop consumption markets for products, especially communication information, exploit online sales channels to promote Tra Vinh's typical products to domestic and foreign customers.
Along with expanding the area of organic coconut gardens, the province is also promoting support activities to encourage farmers to develop wax coconut trees. Up to now, the whole province has more than 1,000 hectares of wax coconut trees that have been granted a Certificate of Geographical Indication by the Department of Intellectual Property and the Vietnam Coconut Association has recognized "Wax coconut trees grown in Tra Vinh province as Vietnamese coconut trees". Among the products processed from wax coconut, there are 8 products that have achieved OCOP 4 and 5 star rankings, widely consumed in the domestic and export markets.
“The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development is coordinating with departments, branches and localities to strengthen investment promotion activities, develop links between enterprises, cooperatives and coconut growers; continue to support and guide organizations and individuals to access policies in production and certification, and evaluate the management of coconut areas in the province,” informed Mr. Le Van Dong, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Tra Vinh.
Faced with the impact of climate change, coconut trees are currently one of the trees that bring the main economic value to Tra Vinh farmers. The province aims to increase the coconut growing area to 30,000 hectares by 2030; stabilize the wax coconut area at 1,500 hectares and have at least 3 enterprises associated with cooperatives, cooperatives and wax coconut growing households to build raw material areas to serve the processing and consumption of high value-added wax coconut product chains, supplying domestic and foreign markets.
