As one of the first households to cultivate Ngoc Linh ginseng in the Rang Chuoi area, Ms. Vu Thi Hong Vien (born in 1985, Hamlet 2, Tra Tap Commune) currently earns a regular income from ginseng. Since 2016, having discovered that the high mountainous region of Tra Tap has favorable conditions for Ngoc Linh ginseng growth, Ms. Vien and her husband, along with some other villagers, began experimental cultivation.

“When we first heard that Ngoc Linh ginseng could be grown in Hamlet 1, my husband and I excitedly walked there for more than half a day. Then we learned how to grow ginseng in Tra Linh, preparing the soil, removing stones, and adding compost… Now, when we need money, we have leaves, roots, or seeds to sell. My husband and I have also just replanted, and we have over 1,000 ginseng plants that are 2-3 years old. Everyone in this commune is learning from us and growing them too,” said Ms. Vien.

With experience growing ginseng in Tra Linh commune in 2014 and 2015, in 2016 Ms. Nguyen Thi Vut (born in 1985, Hamlet 1, Tra Tap commune) brought Ngoc Linh ginseng seedlings from a neighboring commune to Tra Tap to cultivate. “Initially, I was worried that the soil and climate wouldn't meet the standards for growing ginseng. But now that I'm selling it regularly, I feel reassured. Without this ginseng, I don't know how I would be able to support my two children's education in the city,” Ms. Vut said.

According to Ms. Vut, her family used to be classified as a poor household, and although they engaged in livestock farming and crop cultivation, it wasn't enough to make ends meet. Since successfully cultivating and selling Ngoc Linh ginseng, she and her husband have been able to afford over 10 million VND per month to support their two children's university education in the lowlands and provide a stable living environment for their family of three in the mountains.

Currently, the entire Tra Tap commune has over 400 households cultivating Ngoc Linh ginseng on an area of approximately 2 hectares in Rang Chuoi (Hamlet 1, Tra Tap commune, Nam Tra My district). Those households that have been cultivating ginseng since 2016 have been harvesting and selling their produce regularly. The lives of Ngoc Linh ginseng growers in Tra Tap commune are becoming increasingly stable, allowing them to renovate their houses, purchase production materials, and improve their living standards.

According to Mr. Khanh, recognizing Ngoc Linh ginseng as a key medicinal plant for regional economic development, Tra Tap commune has seriously implemented Resolution 09/2022/NQ-HĐND of Quang Nam province, which stipulates the mechanism for encouraging the conservation and development of Ngoc Linh ginseng and other medicinal plants in Quang Nam province for the period 2022-2025. In the coming time, the local government will continue to promote and encourage people to plant and expand the Ngoc Linh ginseng model while simultaneously protecting the forest.
