The Southern Hydrometeorological Station said that the thunderstorms in Ho Chi Minh City and the South are caused by cold air that is slowly weakening. The equatorial low pressure trough has an axis of about 6-9 degrees North latitude. The disturbance of the East wind in the upper atmosphere has a positive impact on the weather in the South.
This afternoon (October 14), monitoring satellite cloud images, weather radar images and lightning positioning shows that thunderstorms are developing and causing rain with thunderstorms and lightning in Thu Duc City area.
In the next 0-3 hours (from 13:10 on October 14), thunderstorms will continue to develop, causing showers, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in the above districts, then expanding to other neighboring areas such as the central and northern districts of the city. Rainfall is generally from 5-20mm, in some places over 20mm. During thunderstorms, beware of tornadoes, hail and strong gusts of wind of about level 5-7 (8-17m/s), heavy rain causing localized flooding.
Also according to the above meteorological station, combined with monitoring on satellite cloud images, lightning location data and weather radar images, it shows that convective clouds are existing in the areas of Dong Nai province (Cam My); Ba Ria-Vung Tau (Xuyen Moc, Ba Ria city, Chau Duc); Ho Chi Minh City (Thu Duc city, District 5); Long An (Chau Thanh); Tien Giang (Cho Gao, Go Cong Tay); Ben Tre (Binh Dai, Giong Trom, Ba Tri, Mo Cay Bac, Mo Cay Nam); Ca Mau (Ngoc Hien, Nam Can, Phu Tan). In addition, the coastal clouds of Ca Mau continue to expand.
From now until the next 4 hours (from 1:15 p.m. this afternoon), these convective clouds will cause showers and thunderstorms in the above-mentioned area, then continue to develop and expand, causing rain in neighboring districts of the above provinces and neighboring provinces of Taiwan such as Tra Vinh, Binh Phuoc, etc. During thunderstorms, there is a possibility of tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind.
In addition, the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting also said that this afternoon and tonight, in the area from Thua Thien Hue to Quang Ngai and the South, there will be scattered showers and thunderstorms, locally heavy rain with rainfall from 10-30mm, locally over 70mm.
The North is about to welcome more cold air
Cold air continues to increase in frequency and intensity in the next month. At the same time, there are about 2 storms/tropical depressions likely to appear in the East Sea, one of which will make landfall.
La Nina appears, Ho Chi Minh City may be cold below 20 degrees at the end of the year
La Nina appears in October. The rainy season in Ho Chi Minh City in 2024 is likely to end later. In particular, in November and December, cold air will diffuse strongly to the south and there will be a drop in temperature below 20 degrees.
