On the morning of July 14, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health held a launching ceremony for the Integrated Communication Campaign with service provision to improve population quality in areas with low birth rates in 2023.
At the launching ceremony, Mr. Pham Chanh Trung, Head of the Department of Population and Family Planning of Ho Chi Minh City, said that the two biggest challenges the city is facing are the low birth rate and the rapid aging of the population.
With a birth rate of 1.39 children per woman of reproductive age, Ho Chi Minh City is one of the localities with the lowest birth rate in the country. Dr. Nguyen Huu Hung, Deputy Director of Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health launched the Integrated Communication Campaign with service provision to improve population quality. |
In addition, the proportion of people over 60 years old in Ho Chi Minh City has now exceeded 10%. In 2022, the city will have 1.033 million people over 60 years old, accounting for 11.03% of the total population. This figure also marks a milestone that we are rapidly moving towards the aging of the population.
"This creates increasing pressure on the social security system for the elderly such as: pensions, health insurance, social welfare, health care, entertainment... The problem of low birth rate and population aging causes a decline in human resources, especially young workers," Mr. Pham Chanh Trung informed.
To solve the low birth rate in Ho Chi Minh City, the health sector calls on people to join hands and implement the message "Each family, each couple should have 2 children". Having 2 children will contribute to improving the birth rate, prolonging the golden population period, and slowing down the aging process of the population.
At the same time, raise awareness among young people about the importance of pre-marital health check-ups to screen, detect early and promptly treat diseases related to reproductive health.
