Deputy Editor-in-Chief in charge of SGGP newspaper Nguyen Khac Van introduces data journalism project

Contribute to building the city's "digital memory"

The special data journalism project “HCMC 50 years” is the result of a process of research, study and comprehensive digital transformation of a massive archive of more than 17,000 newspaper issues published since 1975. This is the first time a local press agency has systematically digitized the entire journey of reporting, commenting, and reflecting the political , social, economic, cultural, and urban life of a special city like HCMC.

By applying artificial intelligence (AI) technology, big data platforms and smart content mining tools, SGGP Newspaper not only digitizes its print archives but also vividly and visually recreates the 50-year development journey of Ho Chi Minh City through interactive longform, infographics, video clips, documentary photos and many modern presentation forms.

Readers can access this work via the address: https://www.sggp.org.vn/50nam – a specialized site integrating powerful search technology, friendly interface, easy to use on both computers and mobile devices.

According to Mr. Nguyen Khac Van, Deputy Editor-in-Chief in charge of SGGP Newspaper: All content of the work is edited and revised according to academic standards, while ensuring authenticity, objectivity, closely following historical developments and honestly reflecting the role and contributions of Ho Chi Minh City throughout the 50-year journey of construction and development.

Highly appreciating this effort, Standing Committee Member, Head of Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Department of Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee - Nguyen Manh Cuong, affirmed: “This is a large-scale data journalism project, with depth and profound historical, political and social significance. Not only is it a commemorative product, the project also demonstrates the digital transformation capacity of SGGP Newspaper - one of the city's pillar newspapers.”

Head of the Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Department of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee Nguyen Manh Cuong and the Editorial Board of SGGP newspaper pressed the button to launch the data journalism project.

Mr. Cuong believes that SGGP Newspaper's pioneering in building a "digital memory" for Ho Chi Minh City can be a model for other press agencies nationwide to refer to, especially in the context of the press industry facing challenges in archiving, exploiting and innovating methods of reaching the public.

From paper to digital space

Saigon Giai Phong Newspaper published its first issue on May 5, 1975, just a few days after the historic moment of the complete liberation of the South. Since then, SGGP has not only been the mouthpiece of the Party Committee, government and people of Ho Chi Minh City, but also the most honest and vivid "urban diary" about the stages of development and transformation of the most dynamic city in the country.

According to the representative of the Editorial Board, this project is also an opportunity for the SGGP journalism team today to pay tribute to the previous generations - the journalists who stayed in war zones, reported in hardship, preserved each page of the newspaper in black ink and yellow paper, so that today it becomes a part of digital memory with lasting value.

In the coming time, SGGP Newspaper will continue to complete the project with the goal of developing it into a specialized press data and search platform, integrating additional topics such as: Urban planning, regional economic development, startup stories, digital transformation and smart urban construction in Ho Chi Minh City.

Not simply digital, the project also aims to democratize knowledge, bringing press data closer to the public. With each article, image or video integrated, readers not only “re-read” history but also “feel” and “deeply understand” the journeys the city has gone through.
