Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport Tran Quang Lam believes that the city will be able to build 7 metro lines with a length of 355km in the next 10 years.
On January 17, Mr. Tran Quang Lam, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport, said that the completion of urban railway line No. 1 is one of the great achievements of Ho Chi Minh City in 2024. This is not only an important step in modernizing the public transport system but also contributes to reducing the pressure on road traffic, especially in the context of increasing demand for transportation.
According to Mr. Lam, previously, Ho Chi Minh City planned 8 metro lines with 174km.
According to the new plan, Ho Chi Minh City will add 12 routes with a total length of 510km. The city has submitted to the Government, and the Government has also submitted to the Politburo for approval the project to develop Ho Chi Minh City's urban railway according to Conclusion 49 of the Politburo, from now until 2035, 7 routes with a length of 355km must be completed, the remaining number must be completed by 2045.
"Building a metro is a very urgent and practical issue. Ho Chi Minh City is one of the 20 most densely populated cities in the world, but we only have one metro line. Without a metro, we cannot fundamentally solve traffic congestion and develop sustainable transport, so we must build a metro as soon as possible," Mr. Lam emphasized.
According to Mr. Lam, with the above importance, the Government, the Central Government, and competent authorities... are extremely interested and will concentrate their efforts and invest in completing the urban railway system.
Regarding the construction of 355km of metro from now until 2035, Mr. Lam believes that Ho Chi Minh City will definitely be able to do it, and must do it, and cannot delay any longer.
It is known that the Department of Transport strives to submit to the National Assembly in February 2025 a specific policy mechanism to be included in the resolution-making program. The resolution will be passed in May 2025. These are specific mechanisms and policies, surpassing the policies of the North-South high-speed railway, the road expressway system and the Ring Road 3 project.
Regarding metro line No. 1 Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien which has just been officially put into operation, Mr. Phan Cong Bang, head of the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Railway Management Board, said that since its inauguration, metro line No. 1 has received great attention and support from the people.
Every day, the trains are full of people using them. On occasions such as Christmas, New Year, weekends... the number of passengers using the train increases, showing people's excitement for this new form of public transport; at the same time, showing the need for convenient means of transport in the context of overloaded routes.
Although he was very excited and happy when people enthusiastically supported metro line 1, during the initial operation, some problems occurred that made Mr. Bang very worried.
Mr. Bang said that the signal system of Metro Line 1 began to be installed in 2020. After more than 4 years, under the impact of the hot and humid weather typical of Ho Chi Minh City, some equipment such as platform barriers have not yet been optimally completed. All of these technical problems will be completely resolved by March this year.
In addition, bad weather such as heavy rain, thunder and lightning... also affects operating equipment, so the Urban Railway Management Board must carefully consider stopping trains to ensure the safest for passengers and metro staff.
The leader of the Urban Railway Management Board commented that in many other countries, in the initial stages of train operation, some incidents often occur because the system needs time to complete and adapt to actual conditions.
The Urban Railway Management Board is closely coordinating with relevant units to thoroughly inspect and evaluate system errors, and is committed to thoroughly fixing them within a maximum of 6 months from the time of discovery.
"Resolving current problems not only ensures safety but also helps improve service quality, contributing to strengthening people's trust and satisfaction with metro line 1. This is also an important step for the city's metro line 1 to operate stably and sustainably," said Mr. Bang.
