VHO - On November 22, at Ton Duc Thang Museum, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Ho Chi Minh City and the Cultural Heritage Association held a ceremony to announce the decision and award the City-level relic ranking certificate to 5 architectural and artistic relics, bringing the total number of ranked relics in Ho Chi Minh City to 193 works.
The event was held on the occasion of Vietnam Cultural Heritage Day (November 23, 2005 - November 23, 2024).
Accordingly, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has decided to rank 5 relics as City-level relics: Ben Thanh Market, Tran Hung Dao Temple, District 1 People's Committee headquarters, Customs Department headquarters, and the tomb of the Inspectorate of the Ministry of War.
Ben Thanh Market architectural and artistic relic (Le Loi Street, Ben Thanh Ward, District 1) is one of the typical landmarks of Ho Chi Minh City, the history of the market's formation is closely associated with the urban area of Saigon - Cho Lon.
The market was started to be built in 1912. Initially, the market was located on the bank of Ben Nghe River, where there was a river wharf for soldiers and people to enter and exit Gia Dinh Citadel (Quy Thanh, Bat Quai Citadel), so it was called Ben Thanh Market.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the French rebuilt the new Ben Thanh Market at its present location between 1912 and 1914, with the South Gate having a symbolic clock. In front of the main gate (South Gate) is the Ben Thanh Market Roundabout, also known as Dien Hong Square, Quach Thi Trang Square...
Up to now, Ben Thanh Market has been built and developed for more than 110 years. Currently, the market is still playing the role of an important central market of Ho Chi Minh City, one of the typical symbols of Saigon-Ho Chi Minh City.
The architectural and artistic relic of the Temple of Saint Tran Hung Dao (No. 36, Vo Thi Sau Street, Tan Dinh Ward, District 1) was built in 1932 and is one of the sacred religious sites of the city. In 1957, the temple was built on a larger scale and has since been renovated many times.
The Tran Hung Dao Temple is a place for cultural and religious activities of local people and surrounding areas to express their respect and commemorate the merits of the Great King Tran Quoc Tuan and the ancestors of the country. This place preserves and promotes the fine tradition of "remembering the source of water when drinking water" of the nation.
Architectural and artistic relic of District 1 People's Committee Headquarters (No. 45-47, Le Duan Street, Ben Nghe Ward) was built nearly 140 years ago. The building was built in 1876, is one of the few early constructions that still exist in the center of Ho Chi Minh City.
The District 1 People's Committee Headquarters project harmoniously combines with the space of the City Post Office, Notre Dame Cathedral, Le Duan Street, and 30/4 Park to become a highlight of the architectural landscape of Saigon - Ho Chi Minh City.
In addition, in this ranking, there are also the Headquarters of the Ho Chi Minh City Customs Department (No. 2 Ham Nghi Street and No. 21 Ton Duc Thang Street, Ben Nghe Ward, District 1) and the architectural and artistic relic Tomb of the Ministry of War Inspectorate, Thua Vu Lang of the Tran family (Alley 113, Tran Van Dang Street, Ward 11, District 3).
Speaking at the ceremony, Director of the Department of Culture and Sports of Ho Chi Minh City Tran The Thuan said: In the work of preserving and promoting the value of historical and cultural relics, the Department of Culture and Sports directed the City Monuments Conservation Center to strengthen the work of inventorying and making an inventory list of works and locations with historical and cultural value.
Up to now, the city has 193 historical-cultural relics ranked (including 5 relics whose ranking decisions have just been announced), including 2 special national relics, 58 national-level relics, and 133 city-level relics.
In the 2020-2024 period, 16 works and locations were ranked as relics, of which the City People's Committee Headquarters and Linh Dong Communal House are national relics. In addition, the City has more than 130 works and locations listed in the inventory of historical-cultural relics, an increase of 30 works compared to the previous period.
“After the Decision Announcement Ceremony today, I request that the works and locations that have just been classified as relics implement the conservation and promotion of cultural heritage values, continue to propagate to cadres, civil servants, and public employees at agencies, units and local people the significance of being classified, research, develop plans to promote, introduce and invite the public to visit”, the Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Ho Chi Minh City emphasized.
