Ho Chi Minh City: Will propose to increase the enrollment target for grade 10 in 2025 to 80%

On the afternoon of April 11, speaking with Tuoi Tre Online about the enrollment target for grade 10 in the 2025-2026 school year, Mr. Ho Tan Minh, chief of office of the Departmentof Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, said that the total enrollment target for grade 10 in the 2025-2026 school year of 115 high schools in Ho Chi Minh City is 70,070 students.

The expected number of 9th graders graduating in the 2024-2025 school year is 88,210 students. Thus, 79% of students expected to graduate from 9th grade will attend public 10th grade schools. Specifically, 110 high schools under the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training will enroll 68,830 10th graders; 5 high schools affiliated with universities will enroll 1,240 students.

In addition, according to Mr. Minh, the total enrollment target of public continuing education centers and vocational education - continuing education centers in the city implementing the high school program is 17,244 targets, accounting for 19.5%.

"The determination of the 10th grade enrollment target this year is based on the following factors: First, the physical facilities of public high schools, especially the cultural classroom block, whether the school is being repaired, newly built, expanded, renovated, etc.;

Second, the classroom utilization coefficient (i.e. the number of classrooms/classrooms). Third, the number of 12th graders graduating in the 2024-2025 school year;

Fourthly, it is based on the proposal of the high school to increase or decrease the total number of classes; the reason for the increase or decrease" - Mr. Minh said.

Proposal to increase 10th grade enrollment quota for 3 schools

Mr. Ho Tan Minh, Chief of Office of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, added that in order to create conditions for students to study at public high schools and based on the facilities of the schools, it is expected that the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City will ask the City People's Committee to adjust the enrollment quota for grade 10 of 3 high schools.

Specifically, Tran Dai Nghia High School for the Gifted, Nguyen Thi Dinh High School for the Gifted in Sports and recruiting 10th grade students for Binh Tri Dong B High School (a new school under construction in Binh Tan district, expected to be put into use at the end of 2025).

"If the above proposal is approved by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, the enrollment target for public 10th graders this year will reach more than 80%, instead of 79% as announced at noon on April 11," said Mr. Minh.
