On the occasion of attending the 3rd Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation in China, on the afternoon of October 18 (local time), President Vo Van Thuong received United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, according to the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

President Vo Van Thuong congratulated Secretary-General António Guterres on the occasion of the United Nations Day (October 24) and wished the Secretary-General in his position to continue promoting the achievement of sustainable development goals, bringing peace, cooperation and prosperity to people around the world.
In a sincere and open atmosphere and as this was the first meeting between the two leaders, President Vo Van Thuong highly appreciated the role and contributions of Secretary-General António Guterres and the United Nations to international peace, stability and security, and affirmed that Vietnam is always ready to support and actively contribute to those common efforts.
President Vo Van Thuong affirmed that Vietnam always considers the United Nations as the leading organization for peace, cooperation and development in the world and a trusted, loyal and long-term friend of Vietnam in every stage of the country's development.
President Vo Van Thuong said that Vietnam is actively coordinating with organizations in the United Nations system to carry out many cooperative activities such as implementing sustainable development goals, responding to climate change, digital transformation, green transformation, ensuring social equity, and participating in peacekeeping forces.
President Vo Van Thuong asked the United Nations to continue supporting Vietnam in implementing its international commitments, including the Our Common Agenda (OCA), as well as in achieving national development goals.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed his pleasure to meet President Vo Van Thuong, and conveyed his regards and best wishes to General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and the leaders of the Party and State of Vietnam.
The UN Secretary-General thanked Vietnam for its excellent cooperation and support for the United Nations in all priority areas of operation, especially peacekeeping, international security, climate change, sustainable development, ensuring water security and food security.
Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized that Vietnam is a good model for many developing countries and an important partner of the United Nations, and expressed his expectation that Vietnam will make an increasingly greater contribution to global governance.
Besides, Secretary-General António Guterres fully agreed and shared Vietnam's views on promoting multilateralism, international law, and improving the effectiveness of international institutions.
The United Nations Secretary-General wishes the Government and people of Vietnam success in achieving the goals of peace and prosperity and continuing to contribute and demonstrate their responsibility to the world and the United Nations.
Secretary-General António Guterres affirmed that he will do his utmost to support Vietnam in implementing its commitments on sustainable development and climate change response.
Sharing about the regional situation, the two leaders agreed on the need to uphold the rule of law, promote the role of dialogue and cooperation mechanisms between regional organizations and the United Nations, and support the central role of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
