Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy revealed that the country is holding talks regarding a second peace summit with mediators such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Türkiye and Switzerland.
In an interview with Indian media shared on his social media account on August 25, President Zelenskiy said he told Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi that he would support India in hosting the second peace summit, hoping that Kiev would find a host country among the countries in the Southern Hemisphere.
“Frankly, this applies not only to India but to any country that wants to host a second summit,” Zelenskiy said.
The Ukrainian president added that he had discussed all the key conditions from the joint communique and the previous peace summit during his meeting with Prime Minister Modi on August 23.
For his part, Prime Minister Modi visited Kiev last weekend after Poland. This was the first visit to Ukraine by a senior Indian leader since Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine.
At a meeting with President Zelensky, Prime Minister Modi said diplomatic efforts should be made to achieve peace in Ukraine, while New Delhi respects the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Prime Minister Modi asserted that India is not a sideline to the war but is on the side of peace. He said that India is ready to actively contribute to a peaceful resolution. The leader stressed that he, on behalf of the countries of the Southern Hemisphere, has come to Ukraine with a message of peace. A few days earlier, India had hosted the third Voice of the Southern Hemisphere Summit, which brought together 120 countries.
The first Ukraine peace summit was held in Switzerland last June. On June 15 and 16, at Ukraine’s request, Switzerland hosted the Ukraine peace summit in the Burgenstock resort. The summit adopted a joint statement with the consensus of 80 out of 92 participating countries.
According to Ukraine, Russia was not invited to the conference due to fears of disruption. However, Russia, according to the Tass news agency, has announced that it will not participate in the Swiss conference even if invited. Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in March that the event would likely focus on Ukraine's position and promote Mr. Zelensky's so-called "peace formula," which is contrary to Russia's interests.
