In a video address on the night of February 9, President Zelensky described General Barhilevych as “an experienced person who understands the tasks of the war between Ukraine and Russia as well as the goals of Ukraine”.

President Zelensky said that the appointment was made on the recommendation of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine - Colonel General Oleksandr Syrskyi, who was also appointed by President Zelensky the day before.

In his first speech as commander of Ukraine's armed forces, General Syrskiy said the country must change and improve its methods of warfare if it wants to defeat the invading Russian forces.

The change in the leadership of the armed forces comes at a crucial time for Ukraine, which has failed to regain significant territory from Russia since late 2022 and now faces the risk of disruption to military aid supplies from the United States, Ukraine's biggest supporter to date.
