Under President Trump's new decree, English becomes the official language of the United States

The White House announced President Trump's executive order, which the leader said took too long to make English the official language of the United States, according to AFP on March 2.

The order also revokes a presidential mandate from the 1990s, specifically under President Bill Clinton, that required funding for federal and local agencies to support non-English speakers in the United States.

With the new order, agencies need to be flexible in deciding how much support they need for languages other than English.

“Nothing in this order requires or directs any changes in the services provided by the agencies (heretofore),” the order reads.

While the White House acknowledges that there are more than 350 languages spoken in the United States, the order makes clear that English has been the language of the country since the founding of the republic, and is used in historical documents, including the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.

Survey data released by the Washington government in 20219 shows that there are nearly 68 million people who do not speak English at home across the United States.

While English is by far the most widely spoken language in the United States, Spanish alone is estimated to be spoken at home by more than 40 million people.

In addition to the languages of other large immigrant communities, including Chinese and Vietnamese, the American linguistic landscape is further complicated by the presence of many native languages.
