US President Donald Trump said on April 22 that the tariffs that the US imposes on Chinese imported goods will be significantly reduced when the two sides reach an agreement, but will not be reduced to zero.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Mr. Trump noted that the US would be soft on China, expecting that the process of reaching an agreement with China would take place "fairly quickly."
Referring to the 145% tariff on Chinese goods, Mr. Trump made it clear that the final tariff "won't be that high." However, the US leader made it clear that if Beijing does not agree to the deal, Washington will set its own conditions.

Earlier in the day, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that trade tensions between Washington and Beijing would not last long and could soon ease. Speaking at an event in Washington, Bessent described the large-scale tariffs imposed by the two countries on each other’s goods since the beginning of the year as retaliatory. However, Bessent noted that the US and China have not yet officially started any negotiations on tariffs.
After several tariff increases, the total tariff rate imposed by the US on Chinese goods is now 145%, including the previously imposed 20% and 125% in the reciprocal tariff package. In response, China has made similar tariff increases, but has announced that it will not continue to increase tariffs after imposing an additional 125% tariff. On April 16, the US government said that Chinese goods imported into the country could face tariffs of up to 245% due to Beijing's retaliatory measures.
The US is currently suspending for 90 days the imposition of reciprocal tariffs, announced on April 2, on trading partners, except China. During this time, the basic tariff of 10% remains in effect. According to the latest announcement from the White House, so far 18 countries have requested trade negotiations with the US.
