President Putin will discuss developing strategic partnership in Vietnam

The Kremlin announced that at the invitation of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, President Vladimir Putin will pay a state visit to Vietnam from June 19-20. This is President Putin's first visit to Vietnam since he was elected President for the 2024-2030 term in March 2024.

RIA Novosti news agency today (June 17) quoted an announcement from the Kremlin saying that President Putin will discuss the development of strategic partnership and international agenda in Vietnam, and will issue a joint statement after the talks.

The agenda is expected to discuss the situation and prospects for further development of the comprehensive strategic partnership between Russia and Vietnam in the trade, economic, scientific, technological and humanitarian spheres, as well as exchange views on current issues of the international and regional situation ,” the Kremlin said.

According to the Kremlin, after the talks, a joint statement will be adopted and a number of bilateral documents signed.

As President of Russia, Mr. Putin has visited Vietnam four times during his terms. The first time was in March 2001, when he officially visited Vietnam. During the visit, the two countries issued a joint statement on strategic partnership.

The second time was in November 2006, President Putin paid an official visit to Vietnam after attending the 14th APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting held in Hanoi.

The third time was in November 2013, Mr. Putin paid a state visit to Vietnam. During the visit, the two countries issued a joint statement to strengthen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

For the fourth time in November 2017, President Putin came to Da Nang to attend the APEC Summit 2017 and other activities within the framework of the APEC Summit Week 2017.

According to the Kremlin, President Putin's visit this time takes place in the context that 2024 marks the 30th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty on the Basic Principles of Friendly Relations between Vietnam and Russia (1994 - 2024).
