Russian President Vladimir Putin signed an updated version of Russia's nuclear doctrine today, November 19, according to Sputnik News Agency.
The updated version of the nuclear doctrine signed by President Putin is called "Foundations of the state policy of the Russian Federation in the sphere of nuclear deterrence," according to Sputnik.
According to the new version of Russia's nuclear deterrence doctrine, preventing potential enemies from invading Russia and its allies is one of the country's top priorities, and aggression by any country from a military alliance against Russia or its allies is considered an aggression by the entire alliance.

The new version confirms that Russia's state policy in the field of nuclear deterrence is defensive in nature and that Russia conducts nuclear deterrence against potential adversaries: those countries, blocs and alliances that consider Russia an enemy.
Aggression against Russia or its allies by a non-nuclear state with the support of a nuclear state is considered a joint attack, according to the new document.

Also according to the new document, Russia's state policy on nuclear deterrence is aimed at maintaining the potential of nuclear forces at a level sufficient for nuclear deterrence.
Previously, President Putin announced on September 25 that Russia needs to update its nuclear doctrine to clearly identify situations that could cause Moscow to launch a nuclear attack, according to RT.
Mr Putin also stressed that Moscow would also "consider" a nuclear response if it received "reliable information" about a massive missile attack by another country targeting Russia or its closest ally, Belarus.
The Russian leader said that weapons used in a potential enemy attack could include everything from ballistic or cruise missiles to strategic aircraft and drones.
The previous version of the nuclear doctrine, outlined in a decree issued by President Putin in 2020, stated that Russia could use nuclear weapons in the event of an enemy launching a nuclear attack or a conventional attack that threatened Russia's existence.
