Speaking at the BRICS Summit held in the Russian city of Kazan, President Vladimir Putin noted that the United Nations Charter came into force in 1945. For nearly eight decades, the principles of the UN Charter "have served as the foundation of international relations and international law."
The Russian President stressed that the United Nations should maintain its role in maintaining peace and ensuring sustainable development of humanity, but needs to "adapt to the realities of the 21st century" to operate effectively.

In particular, the Security Council and other key UN bodies need to further promote their representative role for "Asian, African and Latin American countries".
“Reform of the UN’s flagship organization and the global financial architecture is long overdue. The weight of developing countries in the world economy has changed significantly in recent decades,” Putin said.
The 3-day BRICS (Group of Emerging Economies) Summit 2024 in Kazan, Russia could mark a turning point in the history of global geopolitics. Meanwhile, the world order established by the West is gradually losing its balance and needs drastic change.
This year’s conference is attended by approximately 20,000 delegates from 36 countries and territories, including 22 heads of state, and leaders of six international organizations, including United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. This is also the first BRICS conference in an expanded format with nine countries, including Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, plus Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
