“Investments that are coming up or have been announced in recent weeks should be suspended until things are clarified with the United States,” Macron said at a meeting with French industry representatives.
The comments come weeks after French shipping giant CMA CGM announced plans to invest $20 billion in the United States to build logistics facilities and shipping terminals, a plan that was welcomed by President Trump at the time and reiterated in his tariff announcement speech on Wednesday.

French electrical equipment supplier Schneider Electric said late last month that it would invest $700 million in the country to support US energy infrastructure to spur AI development.
Mr Macron said he had not ruled out any response to Mr Trump’s tariffs and suggested using the anti-coercion mechanism, an EU tool to protect the bloc’s trade, along with responses targeting digital services and the financial sector of the US economy.
The French president added that the response to the retaliatory tariffs would be “more forceful” than previous retaliation against US steel and aluminium tariffs. He called the tariffs “brutal and unjustified” and a shock to international trade, and that Europe must respond “sector by sector”.
