Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced today, September 20th, that French President Emmanuel Macron will visit Canada to strengthen close cooperation on shared priorities, including peace, security, and collective defense.
This is President Emmanuel Macron's second visit to Canada, following both leaders' attendance at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, USA. The visit, from September 25-26, will include stops in Ottawa, Ontario, and Montreal, Quebec.

Welcoming President Macron to Ottawa, Prime Minister Trudeau will discuss continued cooperation on geopolitical issues of mutual interest, including the support Canada and France are providing to Ukraine in its conflict with Russia.
The two leaders will also seek to enhance their countries' capabilities in responding to emerging threats, including disinformation, and advance other important issues.
In Montreal, the Prime Minister will brief the President on Canada's innovation and highly skilled workforce in science , research, and technology, particularly artificial intelligence (AI). He will reaffirm Canada's commitment to working with France and other international partners on the responsible adoption of AI, within the framework of Canada's (2025) and France's (2026) G7 presidency.

Taking place ahead of the Francophone Summit in France next month, the visit will underscore the two countries' commitment to promoting the French language and Francophone institutions. It will also be an opportunity for Prime Minister Trudeau and President Macron to strengthen the long-standing and solid friendship between the two countries, which is rooted in shared history, language, and values.

As a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the G7 and G20, a founding member of the European Union, and a key partner in the International Organization of Francophonie, France is an important ally of Canada on the international stage.
In 2023, France was Canada's third-largest export market in the European Union and its 12th-largest trading partner globally, with total bilateral goods trade reaching US$12.9 billion.
In France, Canada has an embassy in Paris and consulates in Lyon, Nice, and Toulouse. French diplomatic missions in Canada include an embassy in Ottawa and consulates in Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, Quebec, and Moncton.
