Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced today, September 20, that French President Emmanuel Macron will visit Canada to strengthen close cooperation on shared priorities, including peace, security and collective defense.
This is President Emmanuel Macron's second visit to Canada, coming after both leaders attended the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, USA. The September 25-26 visit will include stops in Ottawa, Ontario and Montreal, Quebec.

Welcoming President Macron to Ottawa, Prime Minister Trudeau will discuss continued cooperation on geopolitical issues of mutual concern, including the support Canada and France provide to Ukraine in its conflict with Russia.
The two leaders will also seek to strengthen their countries' capabilities to respond to emerging threats, including disinformation, and advance other important issues.
In Montréal, the Prime Minister will introduce Canada’s innovation and highly skilled workforce in science, research and technology, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), to the President. He will reaffirm Canada’s commitment to working with France and other international partners on the responsible adoption of AI, under the Canadian (2025) and French (2026) G7 Presidencies.

Taking place ahead of the Francophonie Summit in France next month, the visit will highlight the two countries’ commitment to promoting the French language and its institutions. It will also be an opportunity for Prime Minister Trudeau and President Macron to reinforce the longstanding and strong friendship between the two countries, rooted in history, language and shared values.

As a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the G7 and the G20, a founding member of the European Union, and a key partner in the International Organization of La Francophonie, France is an important ally of Canada on the international stage.
In 2023, France was Canada's third-largest goods export market in the European Union and its 12th-largest trading partner globally, with total two-way goods trade of $12.9 billion.
In France, Canada has an Embassy in Paris and Consulates in Lyon, Nice and Toulouse. French diplomatic missions in Canada include the Embassy in Ottawa and Consulates in Vancouver, Toronto, Montréal, Québec and Moncton.
