Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian met for the first time on October 11 on the sidelines of a cultural forum marking the 300th anniversary of the birth of Turkmen philosopher and poet Magtymguly Fragi in the Central Asian country's capital, Ashgabat.

The meeting took place amid rising tensions in the Middle East and Israel planning a response to Tehran's launch of nearly 200 ballistic missiles into its territory on October 1.

Relations between Iran and Russia have strengthened since the Kremlin launched a military campaign in Ukraine in 2022.

"Relations with Iran are our priority and are developing extremely successfully," AFP quoted Mr. Putin as saying. The Russian leader said the two sides actively cooperated on the international stage, and "bilateral views on the world are often very similar."

For his part, President Pezeshkian said that bilateral relations were truly "sincere" and agreed with his counterpart Putin that the two countries' leaders had similar views on world issues.

The Iranian president also admitted that the Middle East was in a "difficult" situation, while saying that "neither the US nor Europe wants the situation to calm down".

Mr. Pezeshkian also accused Israel of attacking civilians and Western powers continued to support the Tel Aviv government in its actions in the region.

The Iranian president has planned to attend the BRICS+ summit hosted by Russia from October 22-24, and is expected to hold talks with Mr. Putin on the sidelines of the event.
