US President Donald Trump has pushed for control of the autonomous Danish island of Greenland since taking office in January, saying Washington needs it for "international security".

According to AFP news agency, in a speech at an Arctic forum in the northern city of Murmansk on March 27, he said: "It is wrong to think that this is just wild talk from the new US administration. That is absolutely not the case. We are talking about serious US plans for Greenland. These plans have a long historical origin."

He said that although Russia is not directly involved in the issue of Greenland's sovereignty, Moscow is concerned that: "NATO countries in general increasingly view the Arctic region as a springboard for potential conflicts."

Greenland already hosts a US military base that Vice President JD Vance plans to visit. The island is strategically located between North America and Europe as the US, China and Russia increasingly look to the Arctic, where new shipping routes are opening up due to climate change.

Denmark has rejected Mr Trump's call to take control of the island, saying Greenlanders have shown they do not want to be part of the US.

Regarding the visit to the US military base in Greenland, AP news agency quoted a source as saying that Vice President Vance and his wife will change their schedule when they arrive in Greenland, scheduled to take place on March 28. According to the new plan, Mr. Vance and his wife will visit the US Space Force base in Pituffik, located on the northwest coast of Greenland, instead of Mrs. Vance attending the Avannaata Qimussersu dog sled race in Sisimiut alone as previously announced by the media.

Vice President Vance's decision to visit the US military base in Greenland "salvaged" the taboo action that violated diplomatic rules, which is sending a delegation to an autonomous territory without receiving an official invitation.
