On May 11, US President Joe Biden said that a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war could happen “tomorrow” if the movement releases hostages.

Speaking at a fundraiser outside Seattle at the home of a former Microsoft executive, Mr Biden said: “There will be a ceasefire tomorrow if Hamas releases the hostages. Israel says it’s up to Hamas, if they want to do it, we can end the conflict tomorrow.”
The US leader raised the issue after warning Israel on May 8 that he would stop supplying artillery shells and other weapons if Israeli forces attacked the southern Gaza city of Rafah, and expressed regret over the civilian deaths caused by US-made bombs.
On the same day, May 11, the “Islamic Resistance in Iraq”, a Shi'ite militia group, announced a cruise missile attack on an airbase in Israel.
In an online statement, the group said it carried out the attack at dawn with an upgraded long-range al-Arqab cruise missile, targeting the Ramon air base in southern Israel, stressing that the attack was intended to show “solidarity with the people of the Gaza Strip.”
Since the conflict in the Gaza Strip broke out on October 7, 2023, the “Islamic Resistance in Iraq” group has carried out numerous attacks on Israeli and US bases in the region.
Also on May 11, state-run Alqahera TV channel quoted Egyptian officials as saying that the country had refused to coordinate with Israel in bringing aid into Gaza from the Rafah border crossing due to Israel's "unacceptable escalation."
The official noted that Cairo holds Israel responsible for the deteriorating situation in the Palestinian territory.
Earlier, on May 7, Israeli forces seized the main Rafah border crossing, thereby blocking an important route for bringing aid into the besieged area.
The United Nations and other international aid agencies say the closure of the two crossings into southern Gaza - Rafah and Kerem Shalom (controlled by Israel) - has virtually cut off the area from outside aid while there is little aid left inside the Strip.
A source from the Egyptian Red Crescent confirmed that shipments have been completely halted.
