On the evening of June 27 (local time) in Atlanta, Georgia, the first debate of the 2024 US presidential election took place between US President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump.
The two candidates made no secret of their disdain for each other, not shaking hands as they stepped onto their respective podiums at the start of the debate. Mr Biden frequently referred to Mr Trump as “this guy” during the debate.
CNN political director David Chalian and CNN podcast host David Rind were the two hosts. According to CNN, the candidates criticized each other on the economy, immigration, foreign policy and abortion rights.
Biden accused Trump of leaving behind a “terrible” economy in response to the moderator’s first question about rising prices for consumers. Biden wanted to make it clear to viewers that his administration had pulled the country out of the hole left by the Covid-19 pandemic. Trump responded by calling Biden’s handling of the pandemic a “disaster,” and that inflation under Biden was “absolutely killing us.” Biden appeared to lose focus as he answered a question about the national debt, his voice breaking off several times.
Mr. Biden also did not forget to focus on Mr. Trump's legal problems with a series of fiery criticisms, comparing his predecessor's morality to that of an "alley cat" and calling Mr. Trump a "convicted felon".
For his part, former President Donald Trump denied that he used the words "sucker" or "loser" to describe members of the US military killed in combat, as President Joe Biden addressed remarks that were seen as critical of his predecessor's actions toward veterans.
Voters currently appear to agree more with Mr Trump than Mr Biden, with polls showing they support Mr Trump's handling of the economy.
This is the first time in history that a sitting president has debated directly with a former president in a US presidential election.
