Asked by reporters when he might lower the 145% tariffs imposed on most Chinese goods, President Donald Trump said: “That’s up to them. Ultimately, what I think will happen is we’ll make great deals and, by the way, if we don’t make a deal with a company or a country, we’ll put tariffs on.”
Mr Trump said he “gets along very well” with Chinese President Xi Jinping and hopes the two sides will reach an agreement.
The Wall Street Journal, citing sources, reported that the Trump administration is considering cutting tariffs on Chinese goods by 50-60% to ease tensions. In return, the US hopes Beijing can reduce its current 125% tariff.
