South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, who has been impeached, was arrested this morning, January 15th, following an operation by thousands of police and law enforcement officers at his residence.
The convoy believed to be carrying Mr. Yoon was on the morning of January 15th.
The Corrupt Practices Investigation Office (CIO) for high-ranking officials announced that it has arrested President Yoon Suk Yeol at his residence and is escorting him to its headquarters in Gwacheon (Gyeonggi Province) for questioning, according to The Korea Times.
In preparation for the interrogation, the CIO is coordinating with the presidential security detail to implement security measures, including explosives checks at the investigative agency's headquarters.
The distance between Mr. Yoon's residence in Hannam-dong, Yongsan District of Seoul, and the CIO headquarters in Gwacheon is approximately 17-18 km, or about a 20-30 minute drive.
Investigators and the presidential security detail are cooperating on security matters, including inspecting the building and its entrances.
The parties are discussing the entrance that President Yoon will use upon his arrival.
Upon arriving at the CIO headquarters, Mr. Yoon is expected to be questioned in a recording room in the presence of investigators and prosecutors. If President Yoon agrees, the questioning will be audio and video recorded.
The list of questions prepared for the interrogation has grown to over 200 pages, an increase from the questions prepared during the initial, unsuccessful attempt to execute the arrest warrant.
President Yoon said he agreed to cooperate with investigators to prevent "potential bloodshed," although he regretted witnessing a series of illegal law enforcement actions, including his arrest, according to Reuters.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Yoon Suk Yeol's motorcade was seen arriving at the CIO headquarters, and the leader entered the building.
Opposition Democratic Party leader Park Chan-dae said that Yoon's removal was the first step toward restoring democracy and constitutional order, confirming that justice still exists.
In an earlier statement, Mr. Yoon emphasized that he did not recognize the legality of the investigation, but agreed to go to the CIO headquarters to prevent bloodshed. "This is an illegal investigation," Mr. Yoon said in a video that was released.
