US President Donald Trump signed an executive order yesterday (January 20) to delay by 75 days the implementation of the ban on the popular short video app TikTok, which was required to be shut down on January 19.

The order directs the attorney general not to enforce the law “to give my administration the opportunity to determine the appropriate course of action with respect to TikTok.”

The order also directs the Justice Department to send letters to tech companies like Apple, Google and Alphabet's Oracle, "clarifying that there were no violations of law and that it is not liable for any conduct that occurred during the period described above."

US President Donald Trump signed an executive order giving ByteDance 75 more days to divest from TikTok or be banned from operating in the United States.

Asked what the order would do to TikTok, Trump said it “only gives me the power to sell it or shut it down,” adding that he needed to make a decision to save ByteDance’s platform.

The short-form video service used by 170 million Americans was temporarily shut down for US users on Saturday, hours before a law requiring its Chinese owner ByteDance to divest on national security grounds took effect on Sunday. US officials have said TikTok under ByteDance’s ownership poses a risk of misuse of Americans’ data.

TikTok restored access on Sunday, thanking Mr. Trump for assuring the platform and its business partners that they would not be penalized for keeping the app running. The platform and website were up and running on Monday, but TikTok is still not available for download on Apple and Google’s app stores, suggesting the two companies are waiting for clearer legal assurances.

The TikTok debate comes at a tense time in US-China relations, with Trump expressing his intention to impose tariffs on China but also hoping for more direct communication with the country’s leader.

“Frankly, we have no choice. We have to save it,” Mr. Trump said at a rally on Sunday ahead of his inauguration, adding that the United States would seek a joint venture to restore the app, which is used by half of Americans.
