(Dan Tri) - US President-elect Donald Trump nominated Senator Marco Rubio as Secretary of State to carry out the foreign policy agenda for the upcoming administration.

"Marco is a respected leader, a powerful voice. He will be a strong advocate for our country, a true friend to our allies, and a brave warrior who will never back down from our adversaries," US President-elect Donald Trump said in a November 13 announcement of his nomination of Marco Rubio as Secretary of State. In a statement after the nomination, Mr. Rubio affirmed that he would "work every day to implement President-elect Donald Trump's foreign policy agenda." "Under President Trump's leadership, we will bring peace through strength and always put the interests of the American people and America first," he emphasized. Mr. Rubio and Mr. Trump were rivals when they both ran for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016. After the race failed, Mr. Rubio turned to support Mr. Trump. On the Ukraine conflict, Rubio initially supported military aid to Ukraine, but has since shifted his stance to align with Trump. He voted against a $95 billion foreign aid bill in April that included about $60 billion for Kiev, and said last week that the conflict had reached a stalemate and needed to be brought to an end. In September, he said that while he was “not on Russia’s side,” “the reality is that the war in Ukraine will end in a negotiated solution.” On China, both Rubio and Trump have advocated tough policies toward Beijing. During the campaign, Trump repeatedly warned of expanding tariffs on Chinese goods, while Rubio called on the White House to ban all sales of components to Chinese telecom giant Huawei and pledged military support for Taiwan. He declared in 2022 that China's economic and military rise is "absolutely the single geopolitical issue of the 21st century." Mr. Rubio is one of the key personnel for the incoming administration of President-elect Donald Trump. So far, Mr. Trump has selected many important positions for the cabinet. President-elect Trump yesterday also selected Ms. Tulsi Gabbard, 43, as Director of National Intelligence. Ms. Gabbard is a former member of the Democratic Party, then became an independent candidate who was considered to run with Mr. Trump. Ms. Gabbard has little direct experience in intelligence work and many people were surprised when she was chosen for the position of Director of National Intelligence. However, she is said to have no obstacles to be approved by the Senate because the Republican Party holds the majority in Congress.
