In the early morning of December 10, the Brazilian President was transferred to the Syria-Lebanon Hospital in Sao Paulo for emergency surgery. Doctors successfully performed an epidural blood clot removal surgery.
Later that day, Brazilian President Lula da Silva's personal physician announced that the 79-year-old leader was "recovering well" and "was able to talk."
However, on December 11, the Syria-Lebanon hospital issued a statement saying that President Lula da Silva would have to undergo another surgery the following day.
On December 12, the Syria-Lebanon Hospital announced that the second surgery of the Brazilian President was successful and his health is currently recovering well.
Hospital sources said Lula da Silva was “very lucid”, “conscious, talking normally” and continuing to recover. The president remains in intensive care.
Doctors expect the leader to leave intensive care on December 13 and could return to Brasilia early next week.
Given Lula da Silva's health condition, on the same day, December 12, Brazilian Minister of Social Communications Paulo Pimenta confirmed that the leader will run for re-election in the 2026 election.
In an interview with CNN Brazil, Mr. Pimenta affirmed that President Lula da Silva is currently in “good health” after recent medical interventions and emphasized that the current President is “the best qualified and prepared” to continue leading the country.
Mr. Pimenta emphasized the results of a survey conducted by Genial/Quaest published on the same day, according to which Mr. Lula da Silva has the most advantage over all opponents in the scenarios of the upcoming election.
