President Biden admits weakness, many opinions call for him to leave the race

At a rally a day after his debate with his Republican rival, Biden gave no indication that he would consider dropping out after what many saw as a poor performance by the 81-year-old president.

"I know I'm not getting any younger, that's for sure. I don't walk as easily, I don't talk as well, I don't debate as effectively," Biden said at the rally as the crowd chanted "four more years."

Biden’s stumbles and sometimes meandering answers during the debate have heightened concerns among voters that he may not be fit to serve another four-year term, and have some Democrats wondering whether they can replace him as their candidate in the Nov. 5 U.S. election.

Voters interviewed also confirmed that it was a bad night for Mr. Biden. They described the incumbent president's performance as weak, embarrassing and difficult to watch.

The campaign held a meeting on the afternoon of June 28 to reassure Biden that he would not drop out of the race, according to two people familiar with the meeting.

Joe Biden, the oldest US president in history, faced only opposition in the months-long nomination contest and won enough support to secure his place as the Democratic nominee.

Former President Trump also overcame his own party rivals earlier this year, setting the stage for a long and bitter general election.

The New York Times editorial board is calling for Biden to drop out of the White House race after his performance at the presidential debate.

"On the evening of June 27, the President struggled to explain what he would achieve in a second term. He struggled to respond to Mr. Trump's provocations... More than once, he struggled to finish his sentences," the council wrote, adding that there were Democratic leaders who would be a "more compelling and powerful" alternative.

In addition, Republican Senate candidate Kari Lake also said that the debate between President Joe Biden and Mr. Donald Trump showed that Mr. Biden "is not qualified to run this country".

“Everybody knows that. I think even our Democratic friends know that,” Lake said at a news conference in Laveen Village, Arizona.

President Joe Biden’s dismal performance at the debate also resonated around the world, with foreign diplomats expressing shock and concern and raising questions about the impact of an upcoming US election that could upend the foreign policy status quo if Mr Trump is re-elected.

Mr Biden's shaky performance in the debate has prompted public calls for his resignation and is likely to leave some of America's closest allies bracing for the return of former President Trump.
