Mr Biden told hundreds of union workers in Pennsylvania that it was time for the super-rich to start paying their fair share of taxes.
Biden launched his 2024 presidential re-election campaign on April 25. The rally was sponsored by the AFL-CIO, the union representing 12.5 million American workers and which formally endorsed President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris the day before.
In his speech, President Biden also described blue-collar workers as the “backbone” of the economy. He pledged to protect Social Security and other welfare programs that help ordinary Americans.
President Biden said reforms are needed to ensure middle-class prosperity, including reforming a tax code that is currently “unfair,” with the 55 largest corporations in the US paying no federal income tax on $40 billion of their profits.
Mr Biden also noted that the number of billionaires in the US has increased to about 1,000. He said they pay an average tax rate of 8% of their income. That is lower than teachers and firefighters, and it is time for the super-rich to pay a minimum tax rate.
