President Biden ended his speech on gun control with the words "God protect the Queen," leaving attendees confused.
US President Joe Biden spoke for about 30 minutes with gun safety advocates and survivors of gun violence at the University of Hartford in Connecticut on June 16. At the end of his speech, Mr. Biden said the White House photographer would take a photo of him and the audience. "Okay, God protect the Queen," he said before dropping the mic.
The phrase "God bless the Queen" became a trending topic on Twitter shortly after, with many expressing confusion over what the President meant. US presidents often end their speeches with the phrase "God bless America."
Many questioned whether Mr Biden was referring to Queen Elizabeth II, who died last September and whose funeral President Biden attended.
"God Save the Queen" was the name of the British national anthem under Queen Elizabeth II. After King Charles III ascended the throne, the song was renamed "God Save the King".
The Dallas Morning News ' White House correspondent, who covered Biden's speech at the University of Hartford, said he and other reporters at the event were confused by the president's remarks.
"A lot of people ask me why the President said that. I don't know, and other people don't understand either," Gillman said.
White House deputy press secretary Olivia Dalton later told reporters that President Biden was "speaking to someone in the crowd," but did not elaborate.
At a hunger conference in Washington last September, the US President also caused confusion when he named and sought out Indiana congresswoman Jackie Walorski, who had died in a car accident a month earlier. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre later explained that the President mentioned Ms. Walorski to "recognize her work."
Mr. Biden, 80, has repeatedly misspoken figures or officials’ names at major events. He is said to have once forgotten the name of US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin when referring to his subordinate as “the guy in the suit standing over there.” The US President also once mistakenly called his niece Natalie as his son Beau Biden.
