The Viettel Marathon 2024 is a prestigious international sporting event organized by the Vietnam Athletics Federation, the Cambodian Athletics Federation, and the Lao Athletics Federation. Meanwhile, the Military Industry-Telecoms Group (Viettel Group) is the co-organizer and sponsor of the tournament.
In its first edition, the tournament is expected to attract more than 25,000 participants. This is the tournament with the highest total prize fund, up to 150,000 USD. The prize opportunities are huge for elite athletes and amateur athletes, running groups and running teams. The organizers commit that the tournament will bring high Asian standards on all running routes of 4 distances in 3 countries, with safety and attractiveness criteria.
Vietnam's track and field star Nguyen Thi Oanh is also excited about the tournament.
The first season kicks off with a race in Luang Prang (November 3, 2024, Laos) and is expected to have around 5,000 participants. The race will then return to Hanoi (Vietnam) on December 1, 2024, with an expected 10,000 participants. The third race will be hosted by Siem Reap (Cambodia) on December 22, 2024 at Angkor Wat, the country's famous world heritage site. Cambodia is expected to welcome around 9,000 athletes, including many runners from all over the world. Athletes will be able to visit and explore the Angkor Wat complex for free when participating in the race.
In particular, the races held in each country will apply an attractive prize structure. In which, the Organizing Committee will divide the competition into two systems including the advanced system and the grassroots system. The advanced system is for international team athletes invited by the Organizing Committee; athletes of the Vietnam - Laos - Cambodia national team; athletes who are awarded the title of Grandmaster, Level I...
Meanwhile, amateur athletes with high achievements (men under 2 hours 30 minutes and women under 3 hours 20 minutes) at the stages will have a odometer certificate issued by the Vietnam Athletics Federation. In addition, the amateur system will have awards according to 4 age groups with a full marathon distance of 42 km and a half marathon of 21 km, with no age group division for the distances of 10 km and 5 km.
Athletes will explore the beauty of the three Indochinese countries as well as receive special prizes.
In addition to the two above competition systems, the Organizing Committee also includes the Club category (Viettel Marathon Golden Club) and the Team category (Viettel Marathon Golden Team) with special prize structures. In the Viettel Marathon Golden Club award, the club with the largest total distance completed by all members will receive a prize of up to 90 million VND.
The top 5 clubs will share a total prize fund of 200 million for the Vietnam leg, 90 million for the Cambodia leg and 40 million for the Laos leg. In particular, the top 5 clubs with the largest total distance of all members for the 3 participating legs will receive the Viettel Marathon Diamond Club award, with a prize fund of up to 250 million. Of which, the club that wins the first prize will receive 100 million in cash.
For the team category (Viettel Marathon Golden Team), each club will register 6 members: 3 men and 3 women. The club with the lowest total score of these 6 members will win the team prize with a prize fund of 237 million for the three countries. The Golden Team in Vietnam will win first prize with 90 million VND in prize money. This is an award to encourage and recognize running teams with members who are high-quality runners.
More than 25,000 athletes will participate in the Viettel marathon
At the announcement ceremony, Viettel representative shared: “Viettel marathon continues Viettel’s journey of “Innovation for people”, with the goal of connecting the community, encouraging the movement of health training for everyone, all ages. We hope Viettel marathon will be developed into a series of marathons globally, building a large community together towards the good values of sports”.
Immediately after the announcement of the tournament information, the official registration portal of the tournament opened for sale on the website https://actiup.net/. Athletes will have 3 days to "hunt" for super-discounted tickets, starting from August 16 to 10:00 on August 19. The organizing committee also announced travel packages, accommodation and advice on preparation documents for athletes participating in the race on the official website. Athletes can access the website or download the tournament app to find out detailed information as well as incentive programs.
