1. Characteristics of directional signs
According to the provisions of QCVN 41:2019/BGTVT, the group of directional signs is a group of signs used to provide information and necessary instructions to traffic participants. Directional signs are mainly rectangular or square or arrow-shaped, with a blue background.
The validity of the directional signs is valid on the lanes of the direction of traffic.
2. Summary of types of signs and the meaning of each sign
In Appendix E QCVN 41:2019/BGTVT, the regulations on directional signs are as follows:
- Sign I.401 "Start of priority road"
To indicate priority for vehicles on the road with this sign to go first, place sign I.401 “Start of priority road”.
On this stretch of road, vehicles have the right of way through intersections without traffic controls.
Vehicles on other roads entering or crossing must give way (except for vehicles with priority according to regulations).
If there is traffic control at the intersection, the priority driving principle ceases to apply (except for vehicles with priority according to regulations).
- Sign I.402 "End of priority road"
At the end of the designated priority road, place sign I.402 "End of priority road".
- Sign I.405 (a,b,c) "Dead end"
+ Sign I.405 (a,b) indicates a dead-end turn. Depending on the dead-end turn, choose the appropriate sign type. This sign is placed on the main road before reaching the intersection to turn into the dead-end.
+ Sign I.405c indicates a dead end ahead. This sign is placed 300 m to 500 m before a dead end and another sign must be placed every 100 m.
+ Dead-end roads are roads that vehicles cannot continue to pass. Dead-end roads can be dead-end alleys (in densely populated areas); roads or bridges that are broken due to natural disasters, enemy attacks, or backup bypasses where there are no means of crossing rivers or streams; roads leading to bridges that are broken, etc.
- Sign I.406 "Priority through narrow roads"
+ To indicate to motor traffic participants that they have the right of way on a narrow road, place sign I.406 "Priority through a narrow road".
+ If a vehicle (motorized or non-motorized) traveling in the opposite direction has entered the narrow road, the vehicle traveling in the priority direction must also give way.
- Sign I.407 (a,b,c) "One-way street"
+ To indicate one-way roads, place sign I.407(a,b,c) "One-way road". Sign I.407a is placed after the intersection. When there is already sign R302 at the ends of the median strip, it is not necessary to place sign I.407a. Sign I.407b,c is placed before the intersection and on the road about to enter the one-way road.
+ Sign I.407 (a,b,c) only allows vehicles to go in the direction indicated by the arrow, and prohibits turning back (except for vehicles with priority according to regulations).
- Sign I.408 "Parking"
To indicate places where parking is permitted, parking lots, bus stations, etc., place sign I.408 "Parking".
- Sign 408a "Partial street parking"
To indicate where partial street parking is permitted, sign I.408a "Partial Street Parking" is posted. The vehicle must be parked with the front passenger side wheels on the sidewalk.
- Sign I.409 "U-turn"
To indicate the location where U-turns are allowed, place sign I.409 "U-turn location".
- Sign I.410 "U-turn area"
To indicate areas where U-turns are permitted, place sign I.410 "U-turn area". The sign describes how to perform the U-turn.
- Sign I.413a "Road ahead has lane for passenger cars" and sign I.413 (b,c) "Turn onto road with lane for passenger cars"
+ To indicate to road users that the road ahead has a lane reserved for passenger cars going in the opposite direction, place sign I.413a "Road ahead has a lane reserved for passenger cars". The sign is placed at the intersection at the beginning of a one-way street where passenger cars are allowed to go in the opposite direction.
+ To indicate to road users that turning right or left at an intersection means turning onto a road with a lane reserved for passenger cars, place sign I.413b or sign I.413c indicating "Turn onto a road with a lane reserved for passenger cars". Depending on the direction of the turn, choose the appropriate sign type.
- Sign I.414 (a, b, c, d) "Road direction"
+ At road intersections, place sign I.414 (a, b, c, d) "Road directions" to indicate directions to landmarks and residential areas. The sign must indicate both the road number (name) and the distance (rounded to the nearest kilometer; if the distance
* Sign I.414 (a,b) is placed at an intersection where there is only one place name and residential area on the road direction that needs to be indicated.
* Sign I.414 (c,d) is placed at a road intersection with two or more places or residential areas that need to be indicated on the sign. The further place must be written below.
- Sign I.415 "Direction arrow"
In densely populated areas, or at intersections to indicate the direction to the next nearby place and the distance (rounded to the nearest km) to that place, it is necessary to place sign I.415 "Direction arrow". In the case of nearby places, it is not necessary to indicate the distance.
- Sign I.416 "Bypass"
To indicate a detour or roundabout in case of a road closure due to road or bridge blockage or construction and prohibiting certain types of vehicles from passing, place sign I.416 "Detour" in front of intersections.
- Sign I.417 (a,b,c) "Indicating the direction of the road for each type of vehicle"
+ At intersections where certain types of vehicles are prohibited or restricted, when necessary, signs can be placed indicating the route for each type of vehicle to the next residential area, sign number I.417 (a, b, c) "Indicating the route for each type of vehicle" can be placed.
+ Depending on the type of vehicle, the location of the residential area and the direction of travel, use the appropriate type of sign and the words on the sign.
- Sign I.418 "Passageway at no-turn locations"
+ To indicate a path at intersections where turns are prohibited, place sign I.418 "Path at locations where turns are prohibited". The sign is placed at the intersection before the road where turns are prohibited.
+ Drawings on the sign should be drawn in accordance with actual regulations.
- Sign I.419 "Grounding indication"
+ To indicate administrative boundaries between cities, provinces and districts, place sign I.419(a,b) "Boundary indication".
+ Sign I.419b applies to foreign routes and routes with many foreigners traveling. Sign I.419a applies to other cases.
- License plate I.422 "Historical relic"
To indicate places with historical relics or places with scenic spots, places to visit... on both sides of the road.
- Sign I.423 (a,b) "Pedestrian crossing position"
To indicate to pedestrians and road users the location of pedestrian crossings, sign I.423 (a,b) "Pedestrian crossing location" is placed.
- Sign I.424 (a,b) "Pedestrian overpass"
To direct pedestrians to use the overpass, place signs I.424 (a,b) "Pedestrian overpass" and I.424 (c,d) "Pedestrian underpass".
- License plate I.427a "Repair station"
To indicate the location of a workshop or station specializing in repairing broken cars and motorbikes on the road, place sign I.427a "Repair Station".
-Sign I.427b “Vehicle weight inspection station”
To indicate the location of the vehicle weight inspection station, place sign I.427b "Vehicle weight inspection station".
- License plate I.437 "Expressway"
To indicate the start of a freeway, place sign I.437 “Freeway”.
- License plate I.443 "Trailer"
To indicate a vehicle with a trailer or a towing vehicle, place sign I.443 "Vehicle with Trailer".
The I.443 license plate is placed on the roof of the trailer cabin.

- Sign I.447 “Overpass sign”
Signs are placed before entering the overpass to organize traffic between routes. Depending on the intersection, signs I.447a, I.447b, I.445c, I.447d are arranged appropriately. At turns, signs I.414c, d are used to indicate directions.
