General Secretary To Lam successfully concludes visit to Singapore

(NLDO) - On the afternoon of March 13, General Secretary To Lam and his wife, along with the high-ranking Vietnamese delegation, returned to Hanoi , successfully concluding their visit to Singapore.


General Secretary To Lam and his wife, along with a high-ranking Vietnamese delegation, paid an official visit to the Republic of Singapore from March 11 to 13, at the invitation of Singaporean Prime Minister and Secretary-General of the Singapore People's Action Party (PAP) Lawrence Wong.

During his official visit to Singapore, General Secretary To Lam held talks with Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong; met with Singaporean President Tharma Shamugaratnam, Speaker of the Singaporean Parliament Seah Kian Peng; received Singaporean Senior Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security Teo Chee Hean; met with former Prime Minister and Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong; visited the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy (National University of Singapore) and delivered a policy speech on "Vietnam's policy on science, technology, innovation and digital transformation development in the new era and opportunities for Vietnam-Singapore cooperation."

On this occasion, General Secretary To Lam and his wife offered flowers to commemorate President Ho Chi Minh at the Asian Civilizations Museum; attended the orchid naming ceremony at the Singapore National Botanic Garden, the name of this new flower is "Papilionanda To Lam Linh Ly"; received typical businesses in Singapore; witnessed the handover ceremony of cooperation documents; met with overseas Vietnamese intellectuals in Singapore; met with officials and staff of the Embassy and representatives of the Vietnamese community in Singapore; visited Pansir Panjang seaport and the Technology Center - National University of Singapore.

During the meetings, the two sides decided to upgrade the Vietnam-Singapore relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. The two sides pledged to continue to consolidate and enhance mutually beneficial cooperation, political trust, and coordinate to resolve current common challenges on the basis of respect for international law, independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and political institutions of each country, and non-interference in each other's internal affairs, thereby bringing practical benefits to the people of the two countries as well as for a united, self-reliant, central and inclusive Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), striving for peace, stability and development of the region and the world.

The two sides agreed to upgrade relations, focusing on key contents such as promoting cooperation for world peace, security and stability; consolidating economic cooperation and promoting mutually beneficial cooperation areas; enhancing energy cooperation and green growth; building capacity and connecting people; enhancing cooperation in the digital and emerging technology fields; and enhancing cooperation at regional and international forums.

To implement the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, the two leaders agreed to assign the two countries' Foreign Ministries to coordinate with relevant ministries/sectors to develop an action plan for implementation.

Discussing new developments in the East Sea, the two sides reaffirmed the need to continue strengthening political trust, calling on all relevant parties to resolve disputes on the basis of international law, especially the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS)...

The two sides reaffirmed that UNCLOS 1982 is the legal framework for all activities at sea and ocean and is a strategically important basis for cooperation activities at national, regional and global levels, therefore it is necessary to maintain the integrity of UNCLOS 1982.

On this occasion, General Secretary To Lam sincerely thanked the Government and people of Singapore for the warm welcome given to the delegation and respectfully invited Prime Minister Lawrence Wong to visit Vietnam at a suitable time. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong happily accepted the invitation.

General Secretary To Lam’s first visit to Singapore as General Secretary marked a new step forward in the bilateral relationship between Vietnam and Singapore; demonstrating the importance of promoting relations with Singapore to a new height, in line with Vietnam’s foreign policy and guidelines.
