80 years ago, on December 22, 1944, in Tran Hung Dao forest in Nguyen Binh district, Cao Bang province, the Vietnam Propaganda Liberation Army - the main force, the predecessor of the Vietnam People's Army, was established under the Directive of leader Ho Chi Minh.

Thoroughly implementing President Ho Chi Minh's guiding ideology of "politics is more important than military", "political tasks determine military tasks, regardless of the circumstances, military tasks must obey political tasks", to directly lead and direct the implementation of the functions of the propaganda army and combat army, the first Party cell was established, and the political work of the Vietnam Propaganda Liberation Army was also carried out at the same time.

Thus, the Army's founding day is also the traditional day of the General Department of Politics; the development of the General Department of Politics and Party and political activities are always closely associated with the process of building, fighting, winning and growing of the heroic Vietnam People's Army.

Along with the development and growth of the Army, the General Department of Politics of the Vietnam People's Army has been constantly consolidated, improved and developed; at first it was the Political Work Committee; developed into the Political Department; and from July 11, 1950 to present, it is the General Department of Politics of the Vietnam People's Army.

Senior Lieutenant General Trinh Van Quyet affirmed that with its position, functions and tasks, the General Department of Politics of the Vietnam People's Army plays a very important role in establishing and perfecting the Party's leadership mechanism over the Army; ensuring the Party's absolute and direct leadership in all aspects.

“The 80 years of practice in building, fighting, winning and growing up of our Army have affirmed the particularly important role of Party work, political work and the responsibility of the General Department of Politics of the Vietnam People's Army, political agencies and political cadres at all levels of the entire army in consolidating, maintaining and enhancing the absolute and direct leadership of the Party in all aspects of the army; building a politically strong army; building political and spiritual factors - the basic factors that determine the fighting strength and victory of our army, making Party work and political work the "soul and lifeblood" of the army, the basic principle in building the revolutionary armed forces of the Party," Senior Lieutenant General Trinh Van Quyet emphasized.

During its 80-year glorious history, the Army has nurtured, screened and forged generations of military officers in general and political officers in particular who are truly exemplary in political qualities, intelligence and practical organizational capacity, exemplary in ethics and lifestyle, and trusted and admired by their comrades and the people.

Many political cadres and officers of the General Department of Politics are exemplary in their qualities, personalities, and talents, and their names have gone down in history, engraved in the minds of many generations of soldiers and people, contributing to building the glorious tradition: "Loyalty - Steadfastness; Exemplary - Exemplary; Principled - Democratic; Proactive - Creative; Sensitive - Sharp; Solidarity - Unity; Determination to Fight - Determination to Win" of the General Department of Politics of the Vietnam People's Army.

With a long history and outstanding achievements, the General Department of Politics of the Vietnam People's Army was awarded by the Party, State and Government: Gold Star Order, 2 Ho Chi Minh Orders, 3 Fatherland Protection Orders; First Class Freedom Order of the Lao People's Democratic Republic.

Many agencies and units of the General Department of Politics and political agencies at all levels in the entire army were awarded noble prizes by the Party and State.
