The most influential scientist in the world

Prof. Dr. Nguyen Dinh Duc, Chairman of the Council of the University of Technology (Vietnam National University , Hanoi ) was born in 1963 in Lai Xa village, Kim Chung commune, Hoai Duc district (formerly Ha Tay), now part of Hanoi. Since his school days, he has shown his intelligence and outstanding learning ability.

In 1984, after graduating with honors in Mathematics and Mechanics from Hanoi University (now Hanoi National University), Professor Nguyen Dinh Duc was transferred to Lomonosov Moscow State University to pursue postgraduate studies. In 1991, after defending his doctorate in mathematics and physics, the school retained him as an intern, and then he became a doctor of science.

In 1997, he successfully defended his PhD thesis in engineering at the Russian Academy of Sciences. With his outstanding achievements in scientific research, in 1999, at the age of 36, he was elected a foreign member - Academician of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences.

Returning to Vietnam, Professor Nguyen Dinh Duc was assigned to work as a lecturer at Hanoi National University. From the first steps on the path of a teacher and scientist, he faced and had to overcome many difficulties and challenges, but also from this fate, he was attached to the teaching profession and scientific research. Gradually, he gained love, passion and success in his work, becoming a great teacher and scientist of the country.

To date, he has published more than 350 scientific works, including more than 200 articles published in scientific journals listed in the ISI journals (SCI, SCIE) with international prestige.

He is the initiator and founder of the Advanced Materials and Structures Department, the Traffic Construction Engineering Department at the University of Technology, the Automation and Informatics Department of the International School - Vietnam National University, Hanoi, and the founder and founder of the Civil Engineering Department of the Vietnam-Japan University.

From 2019 to present, Professor Nguyen Dinh Duc has been continuously announced by PLoS Biology Magazine (USA) to be in the list of 10,000 most influential scientists in the world . In 2023, he ranked 85th in the list of 100 most outstanding and influential scientists in the field of Engineering and Technology.

For many years, he was the only Vietnamese scientist to be included in the ranking of Vietnamese scientists published and ranked by research.com in the field of Engineering.

In early March 2024, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Dinh Duc officially became a member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Aerospace Science and Technology: Journal of Aerospace Science and Technology, Elsevier Publishing House. This is one of the international journals in the SCI index (top 5%), very prestigious and of the highest quality in the world in the field of Science, Engineering and Aerospace Technology.

“That shows the prestige and position of Vietnamese science on the world map. At the same time, it is also a personal honor, an encouragement and motivation not only for me, but also for young scientists and generations of students. Because I never thought that one day I would have this honor,” shared Prof. Dr. Nguyen Dinh Duc.

The happiest thing is to have trained the next generation.

Up to now, Professor Nguyen Dinh Duc has successfully trained many talented and persistent students, creating a scientific school of advanced Materials and Structures of Hanoi National University, of Vietnam reaching international level. Many of his students have also become lecturers at major universities in the country.

Under his guidance, many generations of students have succeeded and become famous scientists. One of them received the Nguyen Van Dao Award - the award named after the first Director of VNU, the most prestigious award in the field of Mechanics in Vietnam and an excellent student was honored by Forbes Vietnam. They have continued his career - transmitting enthusiasm, lighting up dreams, spreading knowledge, love and good things to future generations of students.

“My students are the great motivation for me to have a love for the profession. Each student has a life, a situation, an ambition. When generations of students continue my ambitions and ideals in academia and in the career of cultivating people - to me, that can be considered the greatest success and pride of my life,” Professor Nguyen Dinh Duc confided.

Realizing the importance of high-quality human resources, Professor Nguyen Dinh Duc has successfully built a strong research group on advanced materials and structures at the University of Technology (VNU). Lessons learned from this research group model can be replicated in other universities in Vietnam.

Talking to the reporter of Knowledge and Life about his concerns, Professor Nguyen Dinh Duc said that in recent years, we have had many policies to support the development of talents and develop strong research groups so that Vietnamese science and technology can integrate with the world. From the lessons of countries that have gone before such as China, India, Korea, Japan, etc., it can be seen that for a country to develop, the two most important breakthrough factors are the quality of human resources and science and technology.

“Science and technology are the magic wand for the country to develop rapidly and seize the opportunities of the 4.0 industrial revolution and Vietnam is no exception,” affirmed Professor, Dr. Nguyen Dinh Duc.

Professor Nguyen Dinh Duc's greatest wish and concern is how to improve the quality of Vietnamese education and training, creating talented and virtuous people, especially those with ambition and aspiration to revive the country.

“Along with that, Vietnamese science and technology continues to receive investment and adequate attention with drastic, strong and timely policies, so that the young generation of Vietnam can contribute and quickly bring our country to remarkable development, keeping up with advanced countries in the world,” Professor Nguyen Dinh Duc expressed.

With his contributions, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Dinh Duc has won many prestigious awards and medals: Third-class Labor Medal in 2016; Second-class Labor Medal in 2022; Certificates of Merit from the Ministry of Education and Training in 2019, 2022, 2024; Outstanding Teacher of Vietnam honored by the Ministry of Education and Training in the 40-year educational career (1982-2022); Many Certificates of Merit from Hanoi National University.
